....Loading Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I joined gradcafe because I was interested in finding more people applying to school psych programs or have applied. Anybody Ed.S out there? Fall 2013 applicants? Any advice in general about applying, competition with Ed.S vs Ph.D, not pulling your hair out after that first deadline? Anything? Help? =sums up all my emotions currently
EdNerd2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I'm finishing my EdS this semester and applying to PhD for the fall. Have you decided to apply to EdS programs? I applied to a handful (mostly local to Southern California and a couple in Chicago) when I applied several years ago. Overall, that application process is (to me) far less stressful than PhD programs, as the curriculum tends to be fairly standardized in EdS programs. Basically, just make sure you go to one that's NASP approved and you're fine regardless. Also preferable to attend one that is local to the area in which you'd like to work...

Yes I applied to all EdS programs! I pretty much looked in the south for programs. I stay in Ga and I wanted to be close to home. I also wanted not only NASP approved programs but also those with enough hours. Ga says you have to go to a 72 hrs program to sit for the exam. I just never know what the competition is like for school psychology. I keep thinking about how competitive clinical psych is.

The deadline for my first school (University of Alabama) just passed so I'm all anxious about it. My application was completed on nov 7th and the deadline was jan 15th. I literally have been waiting forever. Not clear about whether they do interviews or not. At first they said no but in their updated catalog they say "in some cases" they do interviews. My other school deadline isn't until March 15th...I'm always waiting. =( I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that focus on EdS. I felt like PhD was such a far stretch for me. I felt way more confident about EdS and I wasn't sure if I even wanted a PhD.

I am from Ohio so I applied to Ohio State (my undergrad university) John Carroll University, Cleveland State, University of Cincinnati, and out of state was Loyola Chicago, U of Florida and Tufts. Kind of a lot but applying wasn't too bad. I just interviewed with John Carroll on Friday (think it well), interviewing with Loyola this friday and Cinci later this month. I think all the schools I applied to require interviews before admission. But I am anxious for OSU because I would love to stay here. Still haven't heard anything and the app deadline was December 1st, as well with Florida. Also, I was just looking at the NASP website and they have a new section with all the stats from different schools and saw Loyola had 96 applicants last year which is a lot!! So really nervous about that interview!! Glad I can rant to someone in my same situation though I don't know anyone applying to school psych programs in general

I don't know many people that is applying to school psych, really any besides those I seen on the internet. Mostly all my friends are doing clinical. Nice to have someone going through the struggle with me!!! Thanks for letting me know about the new stats part! I'm going to look at that now. Have you checked the results part of the website? Search your schools or school psychology to see if anyone posted anything. =) It's good you are getting interviews though. You are on the right track! I can feel many acceptances coming your way
summerbreeze09 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Glad to hear some people are in the same boat as me. I didn't think I had the GPA to get into a Ph.D clinical program and didn't think a school psychology Ph.D was right for me. I feel like I applied to a lot of schools... College of William and Mary, Fordham,Temple, Northeastern, Tufts, Southern CT. Mostly I'm nervous because I don't know how these programs stack up or whether they're good programs at all. Just got invites to interview at W&M and Northeastern. Hope I chose right?

Maybe you should check out the schools stats? See how many people are passing their exams? I think that is a great place to start. :-)
....Loading Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 OK help!! I finally heard something back from one school. University of Alabama The department head emailed me to congratulate me on my recommendation from the faculty for admissions. They said it's conditional admissions (gre 10 points lower than what they wanted). After I screamed and celebrated this I went back and read the email again. It said that AFTER I received official acceptance or "word" back from the department to then email them with my decision. So...basically I have to wait until the graduate department accepts me? I have heard of the two part admissions processes but not in this order before. Usually it's the other way around, graduate department approves then they forward you to the department. I don't know how to take it. Should I be worried? Should I not celebrate anymore? It seems like the wait is never over.
....Loading Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Never mind my previous post! I called the graduate department for clarification on what that meant. The lady could tell I was so worried that I was still in the "waiting process". She simply said that it meant I need to make sure I get that official letter for documentation and once that has reached me to contact the department. She then told me congratulations on my acceptance! I'm soo happy!!!!
