2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

Well my boyfriend keeps trying to tell me that everything will work out eventually (kind of a different spin on the "just wait and see!:" logic". I know he is right, but I am on freak out mode so sometimes it is hard to convince me of that. I swear I need to give him a big gift or do something special for him once this whole process is over for dealing with me through this whole ordeal. Poor guy.

OMG you guys. Went and checked my mailbox when I got home today, and found a skinny envelope. Wasn't a rejection, but I was wait listed! I just want to know I'm going to school in the fall. I guess I'll head over to the wait listers forums to commiserate.

So I had my interview at ODU, and it looks like I'm informally accepted  So that's a weight off my shoulders. For anyone who wants to know (stuff that I didn't realize) it's a 6 semester program with a mandatory thesis, and they require 2 statistics classes so I need to take another one  . Also, for this school apparently GRE scores matter a lot, but it should kind of match up with GPA and course rigor. So for example, Dr. Bountress said that one year they let in a girl with a 2.5 GPA but with a super impressive high GRE. Apparently the reason for the discrepancy was that she was really smart but not motivated and thus didn't do well in the program. So apparently my 3.5 gpa didn't work against me because I took rigorous courses, my Com-Dis GPA was a lot higher, and my GRE scores were quite good. 

 

I'm surprised I liked ODU as much as I did- the area's not fantastic but it is a metropolitan area so it has a wide variety of practicum placement sites which is good. The professors that I met seemed nice and they have really high pass rates over the past 30 years on the Praxis (like 98% or something like that) which is a good sign. Their website isn't the greatest and when I was calling about admissions questions before I applied the person I talked to on the phone seemed bored and uninterested (i mean I don't blame her, but still it was my first impression of the school...)  So it wasn't high on my list of places I wanted to go. However now if it's the only school I get into, I think I'll be happy there because I had a really good in-person experience. (also in-state tuition with a graduate assistantship? holla!)

Congrats on ODU! The campus there was way prettier than I was expecting. And you would be close to the beach! If you end up moving to Norfolk make sure to ask people about flood zones. Some of the streets in Norfolk flood anytime it rains .

So, some random inspiration to share:

 

I work part-time as a volunteer coordinator at a couple live theaters in town and last night I had the privilege of seeing former Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband Mark Kelly speak. If you remember, Gabby Giffords was shot in the head 2 years ago while attending a constituent event in Tucson, AZ.  She has had to re-learn to do everything and continues to go through speech +  physical therapy.  She is inspiring to me in this process both because she is an example of the success that can be achieved through speech therapy and because of her spirit and determination.    It was a deliberate effort for her to walk out on stage and address the crowd, but I thought her closing quote was fabulous. 

 

She said: "Be passionate, Be courageous, Be your best."

I still haven't received an e-mail from UNC-CH letting me know that my decision is there    I know it doesn't matter now, but it's kind of annoying, seeing as I paid an application fee and all.

Boo! Well, you have some great schools on your list, so hopefully the UNC thing isn't too much of a bummer. I was bummed, but they don't have a real way to determine if you even have a chance. Have you emailed Ina Diana yet?

Nope! I know what my decision is (I saw it), but if I hadn't been checking their system, I still wouldn't know. I just feel like if I paid a fee to have my application considered, any school should be courteous enough to notify me! Especially since it isn't cheap   .

I don't know if everyone who applied to Western Carolina got the app checklist / supplemental form, but it was all information that was easily included in the application we had already submitted, nothing really new.  I keep telling myself that it indicates the people who made the so-called first cut, but that may not be the case at all.  Plus, via their email, they would be notifying acceptances beginning March 8th to March 15th .... and not a peep from them on the results board, as far as I can tell.  :-( 

 

I think that the Western Carolina supplemental app was to weed people out...like if you applied to 20 schools and got an acceptance already, applied to WCU as a backup, and were going to decline anyway. They probably just dropped people who didn't take the time to return the form.

 

Or at least that's what I would do.

I am 99% sure I know what I will do once we hear from everyone, and a guaranteed GA would be a big factor. If WCU includes the guaranteed GA with their package, it could definitely help me decide. Making excel spreadsheets with the cost of each univ. left on the list, hubby's known income versus an unknown income if he moves, maintaining this house but having a small 1bedroom for me, etc... A lot at play for us.

Well apparently Radford has made their decision and everyone's portal's have changed but mine still says that a decision is still in progress for me. Somebody also got their decision in the mail so the process is all over. I think this means I've been rejected, but it's my last choice school so I'm trying to look at this positively.

Don't give up hope yet! Another poster from Radford let everyone in Results know that they are from Radford's undergrad, and apparently only the top 20 were notified via mail. So it's possible that it's not all over yet.

Well the fact that my portal still says that my application is complete and ready for review gets me a little paranoid that they may have not even looked at it. I am assuming that everyone's changed when the decisions became final. I have not received anything from them so it is possible that they may have mailed me something since I am sure it will take a few days to get all the way to Illinois. But I am still curious as to why my status hasn't changed.

I think a few people on results had mentioned that theirs didn't change. Whatever the reason, don't be so quick to assume rejection (this is the ultimate example of me not being able to take my own advice ). There are so many reasons why it may not have changed. I still have hope for you.

I also applied to Vanderbilt and the University of Utah. Have you visited U of U? What are your impressions? I have done a lot of online research and talked with some people there, but I haven't been able to visit. I hope to make it out for a look if accepted.

I haven't, but I talked with one of the professors on the phone quite a bit. Unfortunately, my fall was pretty crazy on the work front, so I didn't get to make any visits. :-(  I am hoping to do some post-acceptance trips, if I'm lucky enough to have more than one acceptance to pick from.
