RubyBright Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I was invited to interview at one of my top choice schools, but due to circumstances outside my control - a serious health problem - I can't attend, even though I really want to. What do you think my chances are? I am willing to do whatever the department suggests in lieu of the visit, but I haven't heard back from them yet.
kaister Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 They should understand. I also couldn't attend one of my interviews, so I had a Skype interview. They ended up still accepting me. Not saying this is what always happens, but I think generally they are pretty understanding, especially if you have a legitimate excuse (which, it sounds like you do).
uromastyx Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Agreed, your chances are still very good. No worries.
iowaguy Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I would try to Skype if at all possible, try to be proactive and as much as possible take the initiative to set that up. IMHO not interviewing decreases your chances of acceptance. They want to see you in-person, talk to you, make sure you're "normal" (whatever that means for us PhD aspirants!).
zabius Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I don't think that this will hurt your chances at all. You won't be the only one who can't attend… I'd imagine that there are other applicants who just live too far away or who have a scheduling conflict, etc. A phone interview (or, even better, a Skype interview) should be fine, and the school should understand. While this won't hurt your chances at admission (in my opinion), it will deprive you of the chance to get a good feel for the school (what the campus is like, what your fellow students are like, etc.). The interview weekend is not just a chance for them to evaluate you, but also for you to evaluate them. So, I'd suggest trying to arrange a visit after your health improves, mostly for your own personal benefit. But do try for the Skype interview for now.
RubyBright Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 Thanks everyone, I'm really hoping to go see the school once my doctor clears me!
