Wishful112 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 So... has anyone heard from these guys? I know they had a very late deadline (Feb 15) but as some one who has yet to receive an acceptance I'm curious about what's going on with this department.
Spritely Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 A dear friend of mine was accepted off the Binghamton wait list last year on April 15. I think he only heard he was wait listed in late March or early April (it was the last school he heard from). It looks like someone posted a notification from their master's program on April 2 last year, which sounds about right. Unfortunately, I think you won't hear from them until the end of the month or the begining of April. Then again, two schools that rejected me in late March last year got back to me in early March this year, so who knows? Good luck!
latetothegame Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Binghamton is still reviewing applications; I do not believe they've begun contacting anybody. According to the department secretary, they just received another stack of 80 or so applications from the graduate school that made it in before the deadline but have only just been forwarded (the grad school is running a month behind, apparently). I don't think we'll hear until at least the end of March.
Wishful112 Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Thanks very much for the information. Knowing the situation definitely helps keep my patience going.
latetothegame Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 According to results search some people have been denied admission via the web site. Anyone heard in the affirmative? I should add that a department secretary told me on Friday "things would be happening" within the week.
Wishful112 Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 I was wondering too... My application decision still reads: "Forwarded to the Department," unless I'm not looking in the right place on the website. I'm glad things are happening with these guys, waiting is just painful at this point.
latetothegame Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Someone I know has apparently already been admitted to Binghamton's PhD program and has turned their offer down. I don't know what any of this means; it's possible they admit on a sort of rolling basis and that her app was in really early. I guess there's still hope.
latetothegame Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Well, I e-mailed the DGS and she responded, telling me they couldn't accept me despite a strong application because they didn't have the faculty to support my research interests. Apparently, the one professor (Nancy Henry - she went to Tennessee) I'd mentioned in my SOP as someone I'd really like to study with is now no longer with the program. I'm so sad. Now I have to choose between a fully-funded program that's unranked, but where they really seem to want me, and Temple, a more desirable program, but where apparently they accept a whole lot of folks they can't fund, hoping someone will be a sucker and cough up tuition. I don't want to be that sucker. They still insist all funding decisions haven't been made, but I'm sure I'm on a wait list for a TA-ship.
magelette Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Any other news on the Binghamton front? It's literally my last of two apps and my last shot for getting into a PhD program this time around...
withluvcrazyjane Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 to the person whose friend got accepted, do you know what his/her area of study is? binghamton is my last chance. i'm feeling a bit desperate at this point. maybe i could try begging?
latetothegame Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Friend who turned down offer is 19th century, mainly British, but with a bit of interest in American.
magelette Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Just emailed, still in review, they'll let me know when a decision's made. For the record, my area of interest is Medieval.
Wishful112 Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 Is anyone still waiting to here from Binghamton? I emailed a few weeks ago and they said my file was still under review and they would contact me... but I've got nada.
magelette Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I got my acceptance email on the first, and the official letter about a week ago. Full funding, stipend. Now I just have to move everything from California to upstate NY. My in-laws are thrilled, since they're not too far from Binghamton. It sounds like I may be the only medievalist they're taking this year, but I don't know, as I've only spoken with my adviser and the associate grad director.
