egwynn Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 Thanks! It was a really nice chat and I look forward to going to visit.
no_foam_cappuccino Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Do some programs just never formally reject applicants? I'm starting to worry that I'm going to have to make a decision about accepting an offer based on an implication that I'm rejected from somewhere else...
egwynn Posted February 28, 2013 Author Posted February 28, 2013 I've been wondering the same. I also wonder at what point I should just suck it up and call to find out.
poetry Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 2 rejections, and still waiting... its comforting to know i'm not the only one!
lilybp Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Do some programs just never formally reject applicants? I'm starting to worry that I'm going to have to make a decision about accepting an offer based on an implication that I'm rejected from somewhere else... Most programs accept or waitlist through the department (phone, email). Rejections often come through the Graduate School and take much longer. If there are a bunch of acceptances and waitlist notifications out for your school(s) already, your chances aren't good. At least, that is my experience. Some schools may keep a group in reserve, but often it's simply that the rejections haven't been sent by the grad school yet. If you are uncertain and trying to make a decision, you might call the dept and see what the situation is (less annoying than emailing the DGS, IMO),
sebastiansteddy Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 For anyone interested in Irvine: I was told that top candidates have been accepted and that some candidates who did not make a cut were rejected. If you haven't heard yet, you are in a middle ground. There will be two wait lists: a "primary" and a "secondary." There will be more rejections as well. This should all be happening "this week or next." I am not sure if any more acceptances will go out though, or merely wait lists. So if you are waiting on Irvine - there's still a glimmer of hope!
blueberryscone Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Thanks, Sebastian. I didn't apply to Irvine, but it's always helpful to know the different strategies that schools take. It gives the sense that there's a method to the madness!
sf210 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I think it's strange that it has now been 2 full weeks since I have received any decisions --- good, bad, or waitlist. I got five decisions in early February and then nothing --- what gives? And how do we feel about implicit rejections? Should I contact and ask about my status or just keep waiting? I think I can knock at least 3/9 off my still-waiting-for-decisions list this way.
katja454 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Does anyone have any idea what's going on with Indiana? I've seen a few acceptances go up... so are they done? They're the last school that I'm really waiting on (the rest are implied rejections, at this point), and my intense dislike of uncertainty means that my brain really wants to make a decision on the others soon. However, if Indiana comes into the picture, they'd definitely be a serious consideration...

I have no idea what's going on with Indiana because I just received an e-vite to the PhD open house on 3/22. Except I have heard nothing from them since the department secretary told me my application was complete. I'm a bit confused, but I'm guessing I was admitted off a waitlist that I didn't know about... (either that, or I got the invitation by mistake)

I think they must have psychically felt me post on here. I just got the same E-vite and also have heard nothing else from the department and am now in a tizzy. I guess both of us can't be a mistake??

If it's really not a mistake, then I'm going to cheer for the both of us. I really do hope more information is forthcoming... katja454 1
KenAnderson Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I applied to UC Irvine (Rhetoric and Comp.) , but have not heard anything back yet.... still waiting on Arizona, Washington State, and Univ. of Louisiana Lafayette.....
Porridge Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I'm still waiting to hear from UIowa (implied rejection), UBuffalo (implied rejection) and UWashington. Don't care. I've made my choice!

I received a wait list last night, as did a few others. There still may be more to go out. I applied for literature though, not Rhet.
skybythelight Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 I'm still waiting on something official from Maryland, Michigan and Penn State... but I'm assuming rejection from all three at this point.
blueberryscone Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 Ditto on Maryland and UVA. Maryland told me last week that they'd be done with their decisions by this week, and I'm braced in the crash position, ready to just to get it over with.

I expected a rejection from them a few weeks ago.
bfat Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 It looks like UVA sent out their rejections around the second week in March last year, so there's that to look forward to next week Wonder why they wait so damn long, though. On another note, did anyone else apply to Carnegie Mellon? Looks like they might be sending out admits this week too...

Oh, that's simple. Once you get to a high enough position in academia, you turn into a vampire. You drink blood to survive, of course, but to walk in the day you need to drink in people's despair. Most of the year, the stress of one's own students is enough to get them through the day... but once a year, as winter turns into spring, as the days grow longer and life once again blooms, an extra infusion is required! Cunning and intelligent as academics tend to be, they soon came up with the graduate application process. Think about it: doesn't that explain it a lot better than any so-called rational explanation? ;P Edited March 3, 2013 by Ategenos Grev, ProfLorax, Panabelle and 1 other 4
Panabelle Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 On another note, did anyone else apply to Carnegie Mellon? Looks like they might be sending out admits this week too... AUGH I did! What evidence do you have for your speculation? Oh, that's simple. Once you get to a high enough position in academia, you turn into a vampire. You drink blood to survive, of course, but to walk in the day you need to drink in people's despair. Most of the year, the stress of one's own students is enough to get them through the day... but once a year, as winter turns into spring, as the days grow longer and life once again blooms, an extra infusion is required! Cunning and intelligent as academics tend to be, they soon came up with the graduate application process. Think about it: doesn't that explain it a lot better than any so-called rational explanation? ;P I wish I could give you a cupcake through the internet, because this made me giggle, but you'll have to be content with this upvote. My only amendment would be that they must feed on both despair AND anxiety, and probably founded this forum specifically to generate more of the latter. DIABOLICAL
