sundv004 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I know there has to be a good chunk of cats who frequent this site who applied to the University of Florida English program. I saw that many of the Phd candidates have already been contacted, but what of the MA candidates (such as me)? I saw that a fair number of Phd candidates who were accepted applied to the film and media studies track. Are you at all interested in working with Greg Ulmer and Terry Harpold? Does anyone have any news about Florida and what their admissions situation looks like at this moment? Thanks!
the_lisbon_girl Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I was one of those film studies acceptances, and I don't really know what to tell you...They are having their visiting weekend at the end of March, so I would say it doesn't look good. They said they only accepted 15 out of their 200+ applicants, and I'm guessing that was MA and PhD combined and that all of the acceptances were done back on the 20th, sorry. If you really want to know now, I would recommend emailing about your status.
mcd2003 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I was accepted as well but have not yet received my official letter. What about the rest of you? I'm a little worried for some odd reason. To sundv, Lisbon's suggestion of emailing the department makes total sense to me. They're very nice down there and will probably give you an answer if they've made MA decisions.
sundv004 Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 Thanks for the information. I do appreciate it. I did call around Feb. 28th and they said that they were in the process of reading my application; that they were backed up and that it would take a little longer than usual. I'm going to hold out hope and assume that the 15 acceptances they speak of were for the Phd programs. Otherwise, I'm going to call tomorrow. You're definitely right: they were very kind the first time I called, so I figure a follow-up phone call wouldn't be too much of a nuisance (?). Thanks again.
the_lisbon_girl Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 sundv: Maybe they are separate then. Dr. Kidd said he likes to give good news on Fridays when he called me, so you might wait until the end of the week, and call again on Monday (if you can wait that long!). Hopefully you get good news! mcd: I was also worrying about the letter because I haven't gotten one either, but since I now know you don't have one either I'm a little less worried. Are you going to the visiting weekend/did you get that email? I can't make it that weekend, but I'm going to go in April sometime.
mcd2003 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Good morning! No, I didn't get that email. Weird. I wouldn't be able to go that weekend because of a conference commitment here in Boston, but I was thinking of going in April as well. Maybe I'll email Professor Kidd to see what's up with the letters and such.
wheresthelight Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I emailed some time ago and was told that the admissions committee were reviewing applications for the MA this past Friday. Dr Kidd said I was free to check with him whenever, but I haven't yet.
sundv004 Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 Yes, indeed there were 15 spots for over 200 applications total (Phd and MA), and I am the bottom of the waitlist, which I am told is substantial. Kidd says it honestly doesn't look good. We'll see, though. May as well stay optimistic. Anyone saying "naw" to Florida?
the_lisbon_girl Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Sorry to hear you're at the bottom of the list /: And unfortunately for you, I will most likely be accepting...although are there separate waitlists for MA versus PhD or is it just a free for all? And since they haven't sent any official paperwork, it's hard to say what the waitlist situation is because most people probably haven't decided yet. Dr. Kidd is probably just saying, based on how hard a year it's been, they will probably have more acceptances and use the waitlist less... that's my guess anyway
wheresthelight Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I emailed Dr Kidd again yesterday. I'm in for the Master's program, with guaranteed funding for the PhD should I decide to continue on. They will be calling MA admits later this week. I got an email because I'm abroad.
unearthedlurker Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Has anyone received official letters via mail yet? I know I was rejected, but I haven't received a letter yet... and from what I hear, they're sending personal responses rather than a mass form. Can anyone confirm? I'm out of the game across the board this round, so I'm anxious to see where I screwed up for their program.
mcd2003 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I still haven't received anything official and was accepted almost a month ago. It's really strange.
the_lisbon_girl Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I just emailed Dr. Kidd about the acceptance letters (and other things) and he said "we have prepared your letter and will send it soon".....
sundv004 Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 I'm not sure when they're planning on sending out "official letters," as I received my waitlist information from Dr. Kidd via email (after inquiring). However, I can tell you this: Dr. Kidd was fantastic in detailing exactly what was good and not-so-good about my application, so if you want to know, I would advise just asking over an email. As someone else already pointed out, the U of Florida adcom and faculty have been extremely responsive through the whole process--it's just too bad I didn't get in.
wheresthelight Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Hi all. I just declined my offer for the MA. I don't know if the waiting list is divided by field, but I was in for their Comics and Visual Rhetoric track. Hope someone hears good news.
