  1. I have Point West on a list of places I wanted to look, and have looked at some of the Watson houses so it's good to know I'm intuitively making good choices! Thanks for the info readyforachange & nwitteuf!
  2. Thanks for the info about the undergrad-heavy apartment complexes, I have been wondering about that. Do you think the landlords/realtors would be forthcoming about who lives in their building? I guess I will find out when I'm down there.
  3. I just emailed Dr. Kidd about the acceptance letters (and other things) and he said "we have prepared your letter and will send it soon".....
  4. Thanks Jakrabite. Living on campus is out of the question for me because my SO is moving with me, and I definitely plan on looking at apartments in person (when I visit the program in a couple of weeks, and then hopefully another trip with my SO just for apartment hunting). There are a lot of apartment complexes (kind of overwhelming compared to where I am now), and I guess I was just trying to get a feel for what ones people on here had experience with! And for anyone else on here, you may all have found this already, but it took me some looking to find and it has been a good resource for browsing: http://www.gainesville-rent.com
  5. Jakrabite, I'm also going to be going to UF and have looked at some apartment complexes online, but I was wondering where you lived/where other grad students you know lived and what the places were like (how quiet, whether it was mostly grads or undergrads or a mix/other people, nice buildings etc.). And just wondering, what MA program were you in?
  6. That was basically the approach I took and was advised to take by the multiple people who told me name dropping wasn't necessary. Aside from the politics, the other argument against it was that you'd be doing the Adcomm's job for them since they'd be the ones matching you with the available faculty and they would probably like to think they know the faculty interests better than you. This isn't to say you shouldn't still research the people you'd like to work with -- if the research connections are there or they appear in your writing sample or something like that, the readers will get the message. And to joeygiraldo: It has been my experience that there are very few English departments (from small unknowns to larger and more prestigious) that do not have an undercurrent of animosity running through them. It's more a question of degree....
  7. I am in the same position as you and have had several freakouts. Like if I only have one should I automatically take it/are they crazy I'm not good enough, etc., etc., etc. So I don't really have any answers. I did have an awkward moment on the phone when I was accepted. The prof/English grad coordinator who called asked me where else I applied "because they like to know who their competition is" and first it was awkward because I had already received a bunch of rejections, but listed one of them anyway and then it turns out the prof who called was an alum of that program.... And there has been no end of me trying to make people understand how competitive this is and how lucky I am to have my one acceptance and not none!
  8. One of my first recommendations would be to contact the programs who rejected you and find out why. That's one way to know for sure what you need to approve. Most programs are good about this and the ones who won't respond are the ones who don't want you to reapply (and some progs. don't). I did this the first time I applied and it was extremely helpful. One thing I was told, that might apply to you as well, is that they would have preferred all my recommenders to be English profs (one was humanities and one was a French prof. who I worked with as a research assistant for four years aside from having in class). Yes it's nice to have the DGS and another respected prof who know you well rooting for you, but they are more interested in people who know how you write and engage with the literature you want to study, so maybe there are more 18th century or theory profs who can write for you. Another thing I'd like to point out, and this may just be because you're upset, but your application is about you, and nothing about who your partner or grandmother or friends are is going to have that great of an impact on your application if they don't see you putting forth the effort (also, I doubt that you would name these people in your SOP or anything, so how would they know?). To this effect, I would recommend trying to present at conferences (either in your field or at something like a regional MLA) or get something published. It seems like you've been out of school a while (I could be wrong), so you need to show them that you are still engaged in the scholarly conversations in your field. It has even been hinted to me that if a school you're applying to knows you will be at a conference they might have a prof or grad student who is also attending scout out your work. And like mentalyoga I was advised not to mention people by name in my SOP and not to contact profs because of departmental politics. This is probably one of the biggest reasons why I only got one acceptance. So if you haven't done that, I would. Get introductions from your academic friends or just get email addresses from the department websites. And I would say updating and improving your GRE scores wouldn't hurt either. And maybe re-thinking your list a little more. (same as others have said)
  9. Sorry to hear you're at the bottom of the list /: And unfortunately for you, I will most likely be accepting...although are there separate waitlists for MA versus PhD or is it just a free for all? And since they haven't sent any official paperwork, it's hard to say what the waitlist situation is because most people probably haven't decided yet. Dr. Kidd is probably just saying, based on how hard a year it's been, they will probably have more acceptances and use the waitlist less... that's my guess anyway
  10. sundv: Maybe they are separate then. Dr. Kidd said he likes to give good news on Fridays when he called me, so you might wait until the end of the week, and call again on Monday (if you can wait that long!). Hopefully you get good news! mcd: I was also worrying about the letter because I haven't gotten one either, but since I now know you don't have one either I'm a little less worried. Are you going to the visiting weekend/did you get that email? I can't make it that weekend, but I'm going to go in April sometime.
  11. I was one of those film studies acceptances, and I don't really know what to tell you...They are having their visiting weekend at the end of March, so I would say it doesn't look good. They said they only accepted 15 out of their 200+ applicants, and I'm guessing that was MA and PhD combined and that all of the acceptances were done back on the 20th, sorry. If you really want to know now, I would recommend emailing about your status.
  12. hahaha, i love you for quoting the hold steady. I suggest an alternate back up plan, just so I can quote my favorite line ever penned by craig finn (albeit in lifter puller and not THS), "These English majors wanna be some super-genius novelist, they end up music journalists, the chicks ain't that into it." but i totally agree with your general point about the economy. they numbers of total applications schools have been reporting have been ridiculous this year.
  13. I was one of the film studies acceptances and all I can really verify is that they are only accepting 15 people and that I got my call last Friday from Dr. Kidd. There are currently 8 acceptances posted (if I counted right) which doesn't necessarily bode well...but who knows. And I have no idea about any waitlist. I would contact them if it's really bothering you, it looks like someone did that and found out they were rejected (posted). It might not be good news, but at least it'd be closure.
  14. These seem to have been rolling out over a couple of days. Hooray for false hope!
  15. I am so glad that they announced the rejections via the main website before my ApplyWeb rejection went up. This is the same exact form letter they used 2 years ago (I'm still in the system with a rejection from '07). Oh well.
  16. Nothing....and I know they admit very few outsiders to their PhD program so my hopes are dwindling. But if you don't have an MA, then there's probably still hope. All I know is they wanted to do their "first round of offers" be the end of the month according to an email you probably got too.
  17. I also feel that way about UVA. As long as there's no email and I still say "Pending" I'm good.
  18. Yeah, I knew about the info on the website, so I was thinking this was only the first wave. Hopefully they didn't cut too much and my optimism will pay off!
  19. Hey I'm new to the forum, but I was wondering, could someone who got accepted shine some more light on the situation? How many accepted/applied? Did they call everyone today? Thanks!
