Oregon - English PhD

Recommended Posts

Sooo....

There are eighteen rejections via postal service on the board (someone noted a Feb. 12 post date). I know some of you have received the unholy letter of doom - I'll pour out some liquor for you tonight - but is there anyone else lurking around on GC who hasn't heard anything? I have checked the mail with trepidation for the past week, and have sighed with relief that I haven't been rejected yet...

But what are they doing over there in Eugene? When do acceptances/waitlists go out? It seems like a pretty sizable time gap between rejections and acceptances by now. This is my top choice program and I'm starting to get all angsty-like.

So basically: has anyone heard anything?

I saw this post in the recent topics... I'm not English but I am waiting on their special education notifications. So I can at least empathize with you. Have you checked your status online?

I've been refreshing my online app status all day

Actually, I know that the English program traditionally reminds via phone, so I'm also riveted to that. Hope you get some news from your program...

Oregon English dept. received 176 applicants this  year and took less than 10 percent.... alas, I was not in the 10 percent group :(     Received letter last week.   Great campus.... It would have been an easy move since I live only an hour away....

My condolences, Ken. I haven't heard of any acceptances yet but haven't received the boot either, so I dunno what to think. I'm hesitant to be the annoying guy that emails the DGS.

Has no one yet been accepted here?!?! Gah, I'm going crazy.

I emailed the department a couple days ago because I also hadn't heard anything, and I was told that I'm a "finalist" for admission. Michael Stamm said that final decisions will be made next week. Hope that helps!
That does help! I almost emailed Mike Stamm but held off.... So thanks for the info! So I'm wondering if those who have yet to receive a rejection letter via snail mail are all finalists... I would love to join you in the finalist club!

You're welcome! I think everyone who's left might be in that club :) Seems to me that other than some big fellowship winners, they still have their general admits to notify--and the wait list. Hopefully we'll make the cut for admits, but either way, it seems we're unofficially wait listed for right now :) Good luck!!

Good luck to you, too! Hopefully we'll be able to reconvene in this thread with happy news next week.

I need to accept or decline an offer that another school has given me this week. Not sure what to do about Oregon... I'd really like to at least know whether I got in or not.  What is your other top choice, Cactus Ed?

I was just accepted to Oregon via a very nice phone call from the DGS. There's a lot that sounds great, but I'm a little concerned about the funding. Since I'm not a trained Comp instructor, my first year funding is much lower than in later years. Does anyone have an idea how livable 11,500 is in Eugene?

Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear from them. I didn't get one of those mass rejection letters via USPS, so I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna be wait listed. I'm the same as you - no formal comp training. Oregon is my top choice though, tied with Tufts. I saw your other post - good luck choosing between Oregon and Brandeis. Both great programs in great places!

So I know Brandeis is in a great place, since I got my MA there. Can you tell me why you say the same about Oregon? I've heard Eugene described as a "rural student ghetto," so I'm interested to hear a counterpoint!
I suppose I say the same about Eugene based more on extracirricular interests than anything. I haven't been there more than twice, but it appeals to me for the recreational opportunities, i.e. fantastic fly fishing, skiing, hiking access, and the fact that it is a big running town. These are all requisite distractions for graduate study (helped me clear my head during my MA). I know a lot less about the town itself, but more about its proximity to outdoor areas. I am currently looking at Tufts (high on waitlist) and love Boston, even without the access to wilderness areas.

Well I am a city girl [sic], so the extracurricular options are not really gonna ring my bell. I'm still not going to dismiss it, so thanks for your perspective!

BUT, if you have questions about the Medford/ Somerville area, I lived there for two years, so I'm happy to fill you in! There's a good possibility I'll end up back there next year, so I've been thinking about it a lot :-)

Um, congrats again about Tufts! It's in my top three, and I'm pretty sure I've been rejected. To work with Lee Edelman....ahhhh....
