MagiciansAlliance Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Hi All, I applied to the Ford School for an MPP, based mostly upon U.Michigan's reputation/USNWR/website, and am really curious to hear what people with more experience think about the program. Ford's website claims that graduates are not at a disadvantage when it comes to getting jobs in Washington, can anyone support this anecdotally? What about general impressions of the students and/or faculty? Any additional information would be appreciated. Thanks!
MCneelified06 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Does anyone know about the strength of their funding? We're supposed to hear back within a week, but what is their reputation? More generally, is it appropriate to leverage an acceptance at one school to get funding at another? I've heard stories about people playing "hardball," but I think I would be extremely bad/awkward at this.
applicant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 MCneelified06, I've just seen that you've got accepted by Ford. Congrats! But could you please tell me if this was the usual decisions or early notifications?
MCneelified06 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 The email didn't say anything about early notification, so I'm assuming it was a standard acceptance. Funding info to follow within one week. Sorry, I'm not sure if they've notified everyone who was accepted or if it's staggered.
applicant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Umm, do you know anyone else who was notified? Because my account doesn't say anything, accepted not rejected nor waitlisted... is your status written anywhere on Volverine access?
dagger Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Umm, do you know anyone else who was notified? Because my account doesn't say anything, accepted not rejected nor waitlisted... is your status written anywhere on Volverine access? I also was accepted. They sent out an e-mail.
MCneelified06 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Wolverine has not been updated -- the email was the only notification. Sorry you're in limbo -- that really sucks. Hopefully there will be a second wave of admits.
applicant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 erm, when was this? could it be that they're sending it out in waves...
dagger Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 erm, when was this? could it be that they're sending it out in waves... Mine came at 11:50 Central. I would not at all be surprised if they were to come out in waves. Except for this instance, every acceptance that I received from other schools came a day or more after individuals were first notified. It is very common for schools to send them out in groups.
alteregoista Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I didn't go the the Ford school, but I did go to Umich for grad school. and I can say that they are pretty generous with financial aid as a general rule. Most of the people I knew (myself included) either came in with great funding (tution+ healthcare+stipend) or were able to get that for their second year. If you are good student, and they want you they will try to help you out with coming. As for cost of living, IMHO Ann Arbor is NOT as cheap as you would think.

Thank you. I guess something would be written on my Volverin account if I were rejected, or would it?
NebBronco Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Anyone going to the Spring Preview weekend? I'm planning on it. Too bad that it's the same weekend as GPPI and SPEA.
cerise Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I'm planning on it also- I didn't apply to either of those other programs, so that makes it easier. Nothing like Detroit in the springtime...

Haha...Detroit isnt THAT bad. Keep in mind Ann Arbor is in its own separate enclave about 45 min from Detroit proper.
apsuwa Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 a remarkable strength of ford school is the opportunity to merge MPP with Michigan's Russian Studies, which is far better than those offered in much of the professional IR schools. For those who has an interest in international/public affairs and Eurasian/Russian studies, i think it should either be georgetown or ford school.
number35 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 They also offer an "individualized" dual MA with the Econ department. I know this is cheesy, but their facebook page is pretty well put together if you guys wanna check that out. Not as program/department dense as the information on the website, but much more "facebook" style, if you will. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ann-Arbor ... 6274915606
MagiciansAlliance Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 Number35: where did you get the information about the individualized, dual MA with the econ department? That's appealing to me, but I can't find any discussion of the dual degree on the Michigan site.
number35 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Check out: http://fordschool.umich.edu/curriculum/dual.php Under "self-individualized" dual degrees. The site says that 30% of Ford School students pursue a dual degree.
number35 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 No prob G-O-B.... haha, if I had life to do over again, I'd probably join the magicians alliance!
cerise Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I also really like the option to do interdisciplinary work with the School of Natural Resources. I'm biting my nails waiting for funding decisions. I really hope they send them soon. I have an assistantship offer w/ stipend at a different school, so it would be hard to justify coming here if they don't fund me...seems like such a great program though!
Gonefishing85 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Does anyone know the acceptance rate for Ford? I don't have a sense of how competitive it is in comparison to other top policy schools.
number35 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 From peterson's: Student Statistics: 525 applicants, 56% accepted, 94 enrolled. So, last year they accepted 294 and 1/3 of that attended.
