skybythelight Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 Done! I'm in Warsaw, Poland, but I'm a US citizen. And skybythelight: man! well, if they can guarantee you funding after the first year...is there any chance that if someone else walks away from their funding you might get a chance? Best of luck! And maybe we'll see each other in the Fall? Unfortunately, I'm not even on the alternate list. I think it's probably very likely due to low GRE and GPA... that's what I'm telling myself, anyway.I talked to Kathy Mork, one of the program coordinators, on the phone today. I thought I'd share what I learned in case anyone here is still on the fence. She said that about half of the incoming class attends unfunded. After the first year, funding increases dramatically and you are guaranteed renewal for years 3, 4 and 5 (if you choose to continue to the PhD0. So, Kathy said that it's nearly 100% of students that are funded for years 2-5. She emphasized the department's committment to supporting those students that do attend and make an effort to do well with funding in subsequent years, which sounded very genuine even to my cynical self. This year they accepted 50 students and made 20 TA-ship offers with 15 alternates. They're aiming for an incoming class of 20, with about half being funded.
sebastiansteddy Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 STILL haven't heard from the department. Just sent ANOTHER e-mail. I'm sure I am rejected at this point, which is fine since I wouldn't accept this offer anyways. But what gives?!?! Just tell me! Is anyone else still waiting to hear from UW??? End of rant.
sebastiansteddy Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) Ok, they actually replied to my e-mail, surprisingly. They are "holding onto my application" and waiting to see how many people accept their offer. It sounds like a wait list to me. I don't get why they couldn't have told me this 3 weeks ago, but there you have it. Edited April 8, 2013 by sebastiansteddy
skybythelight Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 That's really weird, they've been really good about communication with me. Good luck!
This_madness Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I still haven't heard from them either. I'll assume that I'm in the same boat...but why couldn't they just say so a few weeks ago? It doesn't matter in any case, as I've already accepted another offer.
hidalgo Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 U-Dubs just officially notified me that I would not be getting off the funding alternate list.
skybythelight Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 Hey guys,It's been forever since I've really been on gradcafe and I wanted to revive this thread and find out if any of y'all in here ended up accepting UW's offer. I did, and I'm really psyched about it. Will I see any of you in the fall?
nokingofengland Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Hello, all. I'm really interested in UW's program, and (currently) plan to apply for fall 2014. I'd be applying to the MA with the intention of continuing to the PhD at UW. Out of curiosity: Does anyone know if it is any more/less competitive for MA applicants than it is for PhD applicants? Or is it pretty much the same? And I'm talking admissions only, not funding. I'd also love to hear from anybody currently at UW! Are you enjoying it? I spoke with someone yesterday in the department and it was (almost) the most pleasant conversation I'd ever had with someone in a graduate office. (Chapel Hill was by far the best.) I'm just looking for some daydream material here, people. I gotta have something to keep me alive during the day job.
