rllnyc Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I received a notice of admission to my top school. My question is..........I know that I want to attend this school over the other 2 I applied to (which I haven't heard back from yet). Although I have until April 15th to notify them of my decision, how soon would be appropriate to tell them if I already know I want to accept their offer? Is there a period that seems too soon (i.e. 2-3 days after notice)? Should I wait a week?
MadScience Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 If you want in and nothing will change your mind, I'd go ahead and accept. The fact is that they accepted you because they want you. If you accept right away, I'm sure they'd be really happy to hear it and they certainly won't judge you or think less of you for it. Congratulations!!! rllnyc 1
selecttext Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 what could another school offer that would make you change your mind? if such an offer is unlikely then you have your answer.
Quant_Liz_Lemon Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Is your top choice flexible on funding? Mine was. So I waited until I knew what my other offer would likely be.
rllnyc Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 was it an official admission from the graduate school or from the dept.? It was official from the graduate school! Thanks to the replies above!! I'm excited. Guess you're right....couldn't hurt since I already know that's where I want to go!
anxiousanthro Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 One thing to consider: I got into my top choice, but a second school that has more financial resources also accepted me. My top choice contacted me and literally told me to keep them informed of other offers so that they could leverage my funding offer. But, if you are happy with the funding and it was your top choice then I think everyone is right! 1. Congrats! 2. Go for it!

That's a good point.....the thing is though, NYU is offering me a pretty good scholarship. I know that The New School isn't big on funding....they were even honest about it during a grad school information session. They don't have much money to give out. As for Fordham, I'm not too interested in going because of its location & also it's a public communications degree as opposed to journalism (which I'm getting at NYU). anxiousanthro 1
ak48 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 If it were me, I would wait until I have gotten all my responses, and gone to the visit day of each school where I may have considered going.
rllnyc Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 Arrg, lucky! I'm still waiting on my official letter from the graduate school. Even though the program director, head of dept and my POI told me that the acceptance and funding is 100% certain. But there's still that slightly unnerving notion that its "not official til the fat lady at the graduate school sings." Haha, I know what you mean! So frustrating. However, you will be accepted. Are you receiving a letter in the mail? That could take some time. I got a phone call and then email from the program director saying I have been accepted, but the official notice from the graduate school was to come 'within 2 weeks.' I ended up getting the email the next day. So 2 weeks might be the time it takes to typically get from the program to the graduate school? I'd still be jumping around excited & sharing the news though if I were you! Congrats!
rllnyc Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 I've already received the letter last week from the dept. saying that they've "recommended" me for admission with all the details on funding. And that once the graduate school does their final review, I'll be getting an official letter from them in a couple of weeks. So I would say 2 weeks sounds about right. Yeah, I couldn't contain my excitement and already told a bunch of people! Congrats to you too! Btw, are you doing a masters or Ph.D? Mine said recommended too! "I am writing with great pleasure to tell you that we have recommended to the NYU Arts and Science Graduate School that you be accepted for admission at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, in the magazine concentration. You will be receiving an email from the Graduate School within two weeks." But on the phone the director had told me I have been accepted, so I wasn't concerned with the word "recommended" although it sounded a little scary. Lol I'm doing a masters, how about yourself?
old_grad Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Hello Neuronies, I am an engineer, and am interested in neuroscience. How would you compare the NYU Neuroscience with CCNY? Also, my POI is in engineering and has projects related to neuroscience. n such a case, can I leverage the strengths of neuroscience department for my PhD? Thanks,
old_grad Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Thanks for the reply. Yes I am interested in computational neuroscience and also electrical interfacing to brain. Best wishes.
rllnyc Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 Well Fordham was weird and said they are revitalizing their MA program in public communications so they will not be admitting anyone for this year. Everyone's applications will be suspended. Then there's the New School for Social Research which just emailed me saying admissions decisions will be sent the week of March 15th. But they are honest about not having much funding to offer to students. Also the program I applied to is Liberal Studies, which is so general and seems more of like something you do for mental stimulation only--not to progress career-wise. So I think I might just accept my offer to NYU now. YAY
