Anyone else moving to the mountains this summer?

Me! I'm actually already living here though. I relocated in December and love it. I am familiar with the area now, and my boyfriend and I are buying a house, so if you have any questions about the location, let me know!

I am--my first time in Colorado/midwest was actually earlier this year to check Boulder out so I'm a bit nervous about relocating, but excited.

I decided this past week, and I'm very excited. I was in Boulder visiting for the open house this past weekend and I really enjoyed it. The town, the mountains, and the people all really impressed me in addition to the research opportunities.

There have been a lot of suggestions to living locations in thread. I think I'll probably try to look for a location close to the mountains yet away from The Hill (west of 9th street?) but I imagine that will be a long shot. The Table Mesa area is supposedly very nice. Unfortunately my department isn't going to send out potential roommate lists from other committed students until after April 15th. It seems like for Boulder that is pretty late in terms of fall housing. I could always manage on the Hill in worst case scenario I suppose if it was cheap and that was all that was left. I've gotten use to sleeping with earplugs quite often this semester.

I've been to Boulder before, but that was a day trip a few years ago and I stayed with family in Denver.  I'll be going out to meet the department in person in April, and was wondering if anyone had any recs/horror stories for campus area hotels.

 

Also- what are people excited about doing in/around Boulder (besides research )?

I went out last weekend. It was really nice. I managed to get there on one of those beautiful "winter" Colorado days (sunny and in the 50's). Then I got to experience a rare cloudy day like one might see in Seattle, and on the last day I got to experience a snow storm as I flew out. It was quite an experience! The hotel I stayed in was quite nice with no problems to speak of. There seemed to be a lot of hotels on the eastern edge of campus presumably to accommodate lots of year-round visitors so I imagine they all have a pretty good system down. This is the hotel my department put me up in, might not be the cheapest though so look around.

 

I like to run, swim, do some rock climbing (I hope to get better!) and pretty much anything outdoors so I hope I will be right at home during the free time I can manage to scrounge up. Pearl Street was great, I suggest you take a walk down there one night. There are lots of fun things to do there/places to shop. The Boulder bookstore in particular might be my favorite bookstore of all time. It just has some magic about it.

Accepted Boulder as well. I'll be joining their Physics programme and am really excited about it. Wish I could have made the visit but I couldn't travel during the semester and for some reason international students weren't even invited?

Accepted admission for M.A. in Religious Studies. I'm flying out there from Sacramento for a visit next month to check out the program, meet my advisor, and attend a conference that the dept. is co-sponsoring. I happen to fly in the day that CU Speakers Series is hosting a talk by Salman Rushdie. Super stoked! 

 

I've been looking at housing and checking out Ralphie's List. A grad student in my program said that many grad students live in Longmont, which is about 12 miles north (with frequent bus service - which the CU ID card pays for). I've also been looking at the Goss-Grove neighborhood as I'll be taking classes at Naropa as well. 

 

I found a pretty cheap hotel within walking distance of the S.E. side of campus that has pretty good reviews, I'll let everybody know what I think when I come back. The dept. is contributing some toward my airfare, for which I'm very grateful -- but since I'm not visiting as part of a planned visit weekend or anything (no such event exists in my dept) I'm covering most of my expenses.

Don't live in Longmont. Boulder housing can be a bit pricey, but Boulder is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the country. Also, if you are at all interested in outdoor activities (hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, mountain biking) you have incredibly easy access. If you're not interested in any of those activities, you should become interested.

Longmont is boring and pointless, and public transportation between the two cities is not as convenient as one might expect.

Housing can be found - unless you are rich, you're not going to live in a fabulous house by yourslef. You will need roommates, possibly several of them. That's just how it is because of the price of housing in Boulder.

I used to live on Goss, and that is a fantastic location.

Longmont is kind of far. If you're looking to live somewhere a bit cheaper than Boulder, I'd suggest Broomfield, Gunbarrel (North Boulder), or Lafayette. My fiance and I are currently living in Broomfield, which is about 15 minutes to campus on 36. We bought a house, and are really happy living in between Denver and Boulder. Longmont is a bit farther, and especially in the winter, can be a really tough commute if it's been snowing and the roads are somewhat icy.

 

Before we bought the house, we lived in Gunbarrel, which is basically just North Boulder. It was nice, because it was only about 10 minutes to get to campus.

 

Another place to check out is Lafayette. It's a nice little suburb too, and again, not too far from campus.

Just found this board, also moving to Boulder this fall! I'll be joining the MA program in Anthro. I'm just now starting the housing search...I guess I'm a bit late on it but wow it's expensive! I appreciate the comments people have listed above. For those already familiar with Boulder/surrounding area, how is public transportation from south of the city getting to campus? I'd prefer to live somewhere where I can bike or take the bus rather than driving to campus every day, especially during winter.

I'm redirecting my trajectorial aim towards a few schools in Boulder. It looks like I might wash out from my anthropology PhD cycle this year, and am looking at rolling admissions MA degrees there. The Wilderness Therapy Psych MA from Naropa is really speaking to me.

I'm bumping this thread. I'm almost certainly attending CU Boulder this fall. I'm going to be doing the MA program in Classics, and I'd love to get in contact with anyone else who's going to be attending, regardless of program! It would be nice to get to know some people before arriving!

I'm definitely coming for the MA-SLP program in, I'd say fall but classes start in August, so more like this summer! I'm really excited. I got to meet some people at the open house and everyone seemed so nice and wonderful. Aurora, have you been to Colorado before? Were you able to visit Boulder?

 

 

Also, I posted in the CU Boulder thread that I'm looking for people who might want to potentially be roommates in case anyone else is interested. I'm also just eager to make some friends and hiking partners!

Cybelle- Awesome! I'm definitely attending too- just paid my deposit today! Funnily enough, Colorado is one of the only states I haven't been to...I haven't been able to visit yet unfortunately, but it looks lovely from the pictures, and I'm hoping to fly out for a short visit to scout out some apartments at the end of May. My SO will be joining me in Colorado, so we're primarily looking for 1 bedroom/studio apartments.

I'm moving to Boulder as well! I'll be attending the ATLAS Interdisciplinary PhD program.  I'm flying down on Wednesday from Canada to check it out, but I have never been to that part of the US before.

 

Cybelle- Have you started looking for apartments yet? I'm not sure if I can lease a place on my own since I'm technically international (even though Canada kind of feels like an extension of the US and I lived in Seattle last year) and don't have an American line of credit yet so I am definitely looking for roommates! Plus I've living with roommates is so fun, I love meeting new people.

I'm heading up to Boulder sometime during the summer for the MA speech-language pathology program! I'm very excited-just sent in my intent to enroll last week so I guess I'm waiting now for all the paperwork to be finalized (I don't know why-but I'm anxious about the wait!)

I'll be visiting at the end of May to look at different housing options. I've never had a roommate before but I'm definitely open to it!

I have been looking at houses on craigslist as they come up but I can't afford to go look at places until June. It seems like most of the houses are not pre-leases and are instead available now. I'm hoping that the university gets back to me quickly so I can get access to Ralphie's List and look at places on there too.

A few weeks? Wow, that is long! Thanks for letting me know that! I guess I can take a break from compulsively checking my email and focus on housing instead.

I've been looking at housing too and agree that most are available now. Have you mostly been looking on craigslist? I've been checking other sites like zillow and housing helpers that have many listings too.

Feel free to message me if you want to exchange information or something and I'll keep an eye for you when I go up to visit in a few weeks.

I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who has to wait until the end of May/June to go look...It's definitely been kind of difficult so far because so many places seem to be available now and aren't open to pre-leasing...

 

As far as the actual housing search goes, I'd also advise checking padmapper. I've been using it and been finding it very helpful, since you can save places and it gives you results from craigslist and a couple of other sites!

I have been researching health insurance and was wondering if any current or past students could share any thoughts on the CU insurance or any other insurance plan in Boulder.
