Just a question about this part-time/full-time work situation. I know we are not allowed to have full time work and can only have part time employment. I am a GTPI (graduate part time instructor, i.e. glorified TA, teach composition to 19 students), which technically is part of a university funding package at a foreign institution that I am attending. The SSHRC website states the following: "You may not concurrently hold an award from SSHRC and another federal granting agency (CIHR or NSERC). You may, however, accept awards from other sources, regardless of value, e.g., foreign sources, Canadian provinces, private organizations, your university." I thought I was in the clear but then I saw this: "SSHRC expects award holders to devote the majority of their time to the timely completion their degree program. SSHRC limits the number of hours of employment per 12-month period to 450." Because our semesters are longer in America ('Murrica!) I teach (GTPI position) 2 classes at 20 hours a week for 15 weeks a semester, which puts me over the 450 limit. BUT it is part of my funding package, which is kind of like an award... AND later SSHRC says that RA-ships are totes cool but says nothing about TA-ships. Anyone have any insight on this? What is the deal with TA-ships? Do they count toward this magical 450 limit? Can I get the school to say it is just a part of foreign funding?

There is a direct deposit form specifically for US accounts. It's on the direct deposit page below the Canadian one. I am filling out the same forms right now What state are you in? Also if they exchanged it today it looks about $8310 USD, which kind of sucks but its better than no money.

Hi y'all. Just received notice here in Colorado. SSHRC Category B for four years, which is all I can ask for (I'm in my first year in US). Score of 13. Had a score of 11.5 year before. Applied 2 times to MA SSHRC and never got it and once to PhD SSHRC before this so don't get discouraged!!!

And by May they mean mailing out the results on May 31st so we receive them sometime around June 20th...

I am a first year PhD student at a US institution who is a Canadian citizen. I received an email from my supervisor informing me that she is going to take a position at a Canadian university because of reasons and wants me to go with her. My dissertation is within the field of media studies/digital humanities focusing on media archaeology of scanning procedures and digital text production (i.e. rather specialized). It's in a interdisciplinary degree program and my supervisor, who is actually in English, is a fellow through it, supervising me. The reason I came to the US institution was twofold. One was to work with my supervisor as she does really unique work in media archaeology, and lets face it, who else does. The second was to move to the US as it is a lot easier to get PhD funding (at least for me in my field of humanities) through teaching and also to potentially make connections for after I graduate. Also there aren't nearly as many DH focused schools in Canada. If I move back to Canada I risk losing a potential future in the US but if I stay I lose the supervisor I need for my dissertation... Help!!!! SOS from a very sad canuck!

Wow, I'm surprised everyone is hearing from the awards office. I called mine yesterday and they didn't even have the list yet. I know the lady who works there and she has helped me in the past. she said if I had the list she would tell me but I'd probably know first. She also said school that contact their students before sshrc makes the list official is a big no-no but it appears it's more common than she thought.

If anyone from Concordia has heard please let me know (by PM of course to not leak info). I emailed my department and they gave me the standard "we know when you know." I'm out of the country for a trip to my potential PhD school so my roommates are under strict orders to open any envelopes with SSHRC on it and emailed me immediately. Poor roommates, I think they are more stressed than me.

Hi guys! I'm moving to Boulder as well! I'll be attending the ATLAS Interdisciplinary PhD program. I'm flying down on Wednesday from Canada to check it out, but I have never been to that part of the US before. Cybelle- Have you started looking for apartments yet? I'm not sure if I can lease a place on my own since I'm technically international (even though Canada kind of feels like an extension of the US and I lived in Seattle last year) and don't have an American line of credit yet so I am definitely looking for roommates! Plus I've living with roommates is so fun, I love meeting new people.

I'm wondering how much everyone's I-20 is and if you absolutely have to match that amount. My form from CU Boulder says the total number for expense for a student without dependants is $44,743, which seems a lot higher than other people are posting. Do i need to show the total 44K or can I just cover the tuition and fees. My school has broken it down: tuition and fees... $29,259 Living expenses... $12,370 Books and supplies..$1800 Personal expenses.. $1,314 However I don't think this is realistic. I usually don't buy my school books, just find them online or use the library s copy, plus the tuition on the cu form is way more than my department told me. How do I get around this?

I'm currently accepted to CU Boulder and high up on a few waitlists. I've visited the universities at which I am waitlisted but have never been to Colorado. The department doesn't do an official visiting weekend because it is so small/interdisciplinary. Is it weird to visit anyways? I kind of figure it would be nice to see the place before I commit to 4-5 years of living in a totally different environment. Should I ask the department? I found some super cheap flights and I can fund myself but I'm uncertain about how to approach the school about this. Any advice? Thanks!!!

I just was reading about the American. Phew. I today accepted an offer at CU Boulder. Should I let SSHRC know I'll be going to an American school? I'm glad to know they'll be okay with changing it.

Mailed or emailed? I received my nomination by email so hopefully it is online cause I don't live in the same city anymore!

grishko - PM if you have any questions/want to talk more. The funding situation for Canada is a little different than the US. I know the schools super well and have lived in all the cities. I'd be more than happy to talk about it!

JSTORpolka & back2black - I feel your pain. I am also in waitlist hell for several schools. It puts EVERYTHING in your life on hold. Also being on the waitlist makes me feel so blah. Like close but not quite good enough. Gah. I'm also doubting my decision to apply to only 5 schools, but as an international student I only had enough money for 5. PS. Grishko Out of Toronto, UBC and McGill I would definitely pick Toronto. I went to UofT, UBC and Concordia (the other school in Montreal) and the UofT English department was way more together/I actually felt like they tried with me. McGill tends to have less of a presence than other schools in English and doesn't offer as much variety of classes and UBC is an absolute disaster in terms of organization/classes. Although if you go to McGill you can take classes at other Montreal institutions which I did (a lot of McGill people take classes at UdeM and Concordia).

hey skybythelight. Do you know if all the offers have gone out yet? There is like 7 acceptances on the results thread. I'm so insanely jealous of people getting accepted but also of course incredibly impressed. I'm really, really hoping I get in cause my other two prospects are totally in limbo. I'm waitlisted at Maryland and just interviewed at CU Boulder however they might not have full funding if any... Do you think the department would be irritated if I called?

skybythelight- thanks for the update. I've been checking the website twice a day since those rejections went up. I love and miss Seattle, especially the Mexican place with the baby sized burritos. Do incoming students have to apply for fellowships and TA-ships or is that all decided by the committee? Also is it the TA union requiring the raise? Is there a possibility of a strike? It happened to me 2 years ago and to my friends too, which sucks because I'd rather just work and not be starving.

Bump. I'm wondering about their specializations programs, particularly textual studies. Do you do your first year as a normal PhD and then transfer in? Also how many graduate students are there? Do you know the success rate of applicants? Lastly did anyone have a MA coming into the PhD? I was shocked when I talked to the DGS at Maryland the other day that most applicants did not have a MA. In Canada almost everyone gets a MA and then a PhD separately for the arts. Thanks!

Condos can be pricy but Seattle is one of the more expensive cities to live in. I lived there last year and found some cat friendly places, although I mainly lived on Cap Hill. I preferred being in Capitol Hill because there are lots of parks and it is easy to bike to the university but far away from all the undergrads/frats and nicer places. SoDo is also quite hip. It really depends on what you want. Green lake area too can be nice. If you want a fun day trip here are some ideas: 1. Rent a bike, there are great paths along the water (Burke-Gilman Trail). You can ride it from the uni to gasworks park. Also just down the street from the park is a great bar called Brouwer's Café that has a ridiculous amount of tap beer. 2. Aquarium on the water downtown 3. The Pine Box, my favourite bar in Seattle. It's a converted mausoleum and really beautiful, plus they have good pizza. 4.Volunteer Park, it's really nice if it is sunny! Have lunch and take a nap. 5. Seattle Bouldering Project. It's the largest freestyle climbing gym. I love it even though I'm horrible, and the people there are super nice if it is your first time. Also don't waste time/money on the EMP. SO BORING.

MedievalMadness: I emailed them and they emailed me back, although the prof who I would work with also emailed them, asking them to contact me. They are calling though on Wednesday apparently. Thanks btw. purpleperson: HUGS! I cried when I got rejected last week, then my friends got me drunk and somehow it made things slightly better. During that episode I decided I didn't need a PhD and was going to be a cat walker which seemed like a good idea till the next day.

Don't give up hope!!! I emailed the DGS thinking it was over, but my contact at Maryland urged me to try anyways. However they JUST notified me that I am in the top 30 finalists and they hadn't called me yet. I'm still 3rd in line for the 'digital humanities' spot. Also they are only admitting 10 student this year. The top 30 have been fully finalized as of this week.
