Regenerative Christine Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I literally feel like I don't even want to talk to anybody until I find out the results. My dad asked me this morning about my status and what my plan B would be. I seriously just ended dumbfounded and preoccupied with all the anxiety that's currently going on in my head. The whole application experience (particularly the meeting/interview process) just felt like one elaborate date with somebody you are ready to make a pretty heavy investment to. It literally feels like I have just been waiting around for months to see if they're ready to take this "further", or if they'd rather "see other people." Lol, what an analogy
gradman128510 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 My parents now ask me: did you get any mail today? did you get any mail today?
tarrman Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Having the opposite experience with my family, and I kind of feel bad about it. I've kept them completely out of the loop, and I haven't told them about any of my acceptances or my visits.
daydreamer254 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Last week Friday my uncle and aunty were asking me about grad school...and then another uncle asked what my Plan B was...I was very anxious then. Not fun.
WishfulThinker Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 It's even worse when you let them know you were rejected .
GlassShadow Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I understand how you feel.. It's not a pleasant experience at all when everyone you know asks about your plan B when the only thing on your mind is your plan A, which is the very source of your anxiety. @MidnightRose Yay, we are applying to the same program! I think we should be getting the letters this week or next week.
GlassShadow Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 That's great! Waiting for four months to hear back is so brutal. Best wishes and hopefully we both get good news! Best wishes to you too! I agree, 4 months is pretty insane, considering our deadline was Dec.3rd. I've been so jittery lately.

I haven't told any family members and feel a little guilty, but not too guilty.
weymiller Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I told my mother I got a rejection letter from Vermont. Her response was "What about Madison?" I went to Madison for my undergraduate and did not apply there. She was confused and not really sensitive to the fact that I was rejected. My parents see graduate school as a way for me to escape having a "real job." So, I have stopped including them in my graduate school plans though they will support me in whatever I decide to do.
CounsellingPsych Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 @MidnightRose and @GlassShadow Applied to the M.Ed as well! Fingers crossed for all 3 of us! Ahh I am soo nervous..I keep running home from work to check the mail. Any idea how many applicants are accepted for the part-time option? MidnightRose 1

Any idea how many applicants are accepted for the part-time option? http://www.ro.oise.utoronto.ca/RGSOff_Min_Stat3Page9.html That was the stats from last year, they had 32 people registered! And yes, hope we all get in!! I called them today actually, but they refused to tell me the status because of "security reasons." So I guess contacting them at this point is futile, waiting is the only option...ugh MidnightRose 1
Mescor Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 @GlassShadow Did they tell you when you could expect a reply when you called? I know the website says early April but I thought I read somewhere that there was a window from early April to late May. I hope I am completely mistaken about that. The anticipation is stressful!
GlassShadow Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 (edited) @GlassShadow Did they tell you when you could expect a reply when you called? I know the website says early April but I thought I read somewhere that there was a window from early April to late May. I hope I am completely mistaken about that. The anticipation is stressful! The person I spoke to was being very vague, apparently they have already sent out the first batch of letters last friday. I asked him if they do it by area, but he said no, it didn't matter. He told me they need time to fold the envelopes and get everything stamped, that's why it's going to take a while for some people and we should receive them in the next two weeks (again, very general), but there is a possibility that we might get it this week. (That's just mean, teasing but not confirming..) I'm guessing the window you are referring to is "waitlist"? Because according to the person, you should have received a response of some kind by the second week of April. Edited March 21, 2013 by GlassShadow

GlassShadow Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 (edited) I received my letter of acceptance in the mail today!! Hopefully you receive yours soon!! Omg, that's great!!! Congrats~ you must be ecstatic. =) I hope I get a response soon. Totally nervous!! By the way, is it just a letter in a normal envelope, or a bigger package? Edited March 22, 2013 by GlassShadow
zebura Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Now I down to my last hope and my parents already said that I am definitely not getting into grad school. They said I was just wasting money and time. My professor said I can work for him if I cannot get into grad school this year, yet my parents really don't like it. They want me to find jobs in the job market. So now I feel there is a huge burden. If I don't make it, I will be screwed............and I really want to work with my professor as I spent so much time on my project and I am having positive results >.<

Coming from a very blue-collar family I got that programming drilled into me at a young age, that the goal of college is to make money, and I honestly didn't think I was really accomplishing anything until I had a decent job. Even then, I would do research on the side of a couple supervisors and after I started getting published all my father could ask was why I wasn't getting paid for it. A couple years later I'm getting paid to travel around the country and now I'm actually getting offered pre-conference presentation slots (which have a ton of perks), I think it's settling in for my family what the longer term benefits are. I obviously don't know your situation (or much about genetics program for that matter) but if you could afford to work for your professor that could look good if you need to reapply next year.
