karish11 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hey everyone! Like a lot of people, I'm waiting anxiously to hear back from grad schools. So far the news I've received hasn't been the best. I'm on the wait-list for a few schools (which I'm not even sure will work out but fingers crossed!) and the others have been rejections. I have a few more schools, but I think I really need to start looking into other options. I graduated with a degree in Psychology, and since I have not yet taken any of the pre-requisite courses for a masters in speech language pathology, I believe I'm at a huge disadvantage. So I've started to look into taking a post-bacc program just in case I have to apply again next year. For those of you who have taken post-bacc programs, I wanted to know if there were any online post-bacc programs that are relatively short. Most of the programs that i have looked into require a time commitment of two semesters and one summer, but I was wondering if there is anything that would allow me to complete the pre-reqs in two semesters. I'm also looking into on-campus post-bacc programs, so if you guys have any suggestions as to which ones are fairly easy to get into, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks and good luck to all of you guys waiting to hear back from school!!
queenleblanc Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hey!!! We have a bunch of threads on this on the SLP discussion board. Check it out here: Speech-Language Pathology
midnight Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Emerson and other schools with similar minimal prereq requirements might be another option for you: May I enter the graduate program if I don’t have an undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders? Certainly. Approximately half of our entering graduate students in the past several years have had undergraduate degrees (and careers) in other areas. However, Emerson requires that all entering graduate students have completed at least five undergraduate preparatory courses prior to matriculating. The courses do not have to be completed prior to applying for admission; however, they must be completed prior to beginning the program. To facilitate this, the department offers these course during the fall and spring semesters as well as in a concentrated format during the summer.
karish11 Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Thanks so much! Ill definitely check it out!
rchelley1 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I'm finishing up my last semester at the University of South Florida (USF) for communication sciences and disorders. They have a 3 semester (summer, fall, spring) post-bac program that will earn you a second bachelor's in CSD and cover all the pre-reqs for graduate school. The program is 100% online. The nice thing is that most of the professors expect that you may have other things to do (work, family, etc), so the majority of assignments are all due on the same day and a full week is given to complete coursework. I highly recommend this program and, if you find you need a post-bac program, maybe it will work for you as well. www.usf.edu. I'm waiting on my admissions letters too...sooo sick of waiting! Good luck!
karish11 Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Thats so great!! Ill look more into that! Would you say the work load is light/medium/heavy? And is it relatively easy? I mean I know its not going to be a piece of cake but just wondering about the difficulty level! Thanks!
