Ok, I'm ripping my hair out over this one.

I don't know which to attend.

Newhouse definitely has the better program as far as preparing you for the changing world of journalism goes. I really think it is a much better program than nyu.

But nyu is in nyc...and definitely is better for getting internships and making connections. Also, its mad expensive.

So...which one is better in the long run? A better program or better location that can get you more real world experience?

Also, its been my dream to live in NYC my entire life. There is no place I'd rather be.

PLEASE HELPP

Hi, I am in a similar situation as you. I am currently a NYU graduate student, attending part time due to the cost of school and living here. It has also always been my dream to live in NYC and it has become a reality. The reality of it though is that it is really expensive, as anticipated, and it's really difficult to actually live out here if there is not a steady income of money, especially if while going to school you are trying not to acquire massive debt. I am in the process of switching to SU for their Masters program in New Media Management, but keep waffling back and forth because I came out here for opportunities. With NYU I feel that the money spent is not necessarily for the education, but for the connections and networking which they can provide you. From talking to others about my decision to switch schools, I am continuously told that the education from SU is great and they are able to provide strong alumni connections and other networking options. Long story short, if you are ready to move to the city, be away from friends and family, pay the crazy prices for a small living space, and mature extremely fast (not sure of your age) then NYU is a good choice. BUT, if you can wait an extra year or two to finish a graduate program that will save you money in the end and potentially lead you out to the city I would say chose SU. Hope this could help a little bit.

I'll offer my Syracuse perspective.  I didn't attend Newhouse, but another college at Syracuse and ended up working in the field of advertising.  I've plugged into the Newhouse alumni network throughout my career and can tell you that if NYC is where you want to be, Syracuse has the connections.  I would say it's their primary market and you wouldn't need to worry.  Just my two cents.  Good luck!

You have your whole life to live in NYC.  Graduate school is only 2 years; you can always move to NYC after you finish graduate school.  You don't have to go to grad school here to live here eventually.  Also, IMO living in NYC is overrated.  I am here as a grad student now and it's ridiculously expensive, and the apartments are tiny.

If Newhouse has the better program and it's more affordable, go there.  You can always move to NYC later.
