Amerz Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I interviewed at a school (they flew me out and everything) then heard nothing for weeks. So I emailed my POI to basically ask if all decisions have been made. POI didnt respond for a week, then emailed me yesterday to say sorry for the delay, and will call me tomorrow. ?? Should I get my hopes up? It's so late in the game I'm thinking I'm just waitlisted at best... Wouldn't they have contacted me sooner?
khaled Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I guess that you are not rejected nor admitted yet. Maybe it's an interview
Amerz Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 I already had a Skype interview in Jan, followed by an in person interview in Feb. So I'm assuming this is the call to reject/accept/waitlist me. I'm just freaking out a little, the waiting is the worst part! :|
selecttext Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 It probably means that you will get news tomorrow. I imagine that there is some kind of delay in the department that he will explain over the phone. I doubt he would call if you were rejected.
acquablu Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Amerz, I completely understand what this is like. At a few schools I interviewed in person, only to hear nothing afterwards until I contacted the POI's myself. It turns out I was waitlisted at all of those schools however silence is not always an indicator of the decision. Recently, I found out from yet another school that I am very much in the running for a spot and extremely close to a formal offer (no other school gave me hope). For my part, I did email the department a couple of times to express my interest and tell them about other offers I have. If you initiated contact, that shows them that the school is important to you. The point of all of this is that it isn't over until it's over, if that helps you. I hope the call brings good news and congratulations on your other acceptances!!! I definitely agree that they don't usually call to send rejection news. Most schools like to wimp out and send vague emails or letters. In fact, yesterday I received a rejection letter from a school that I turned down; of course, they had to make it seem like they were the ones with the power. I thought that was kind of funny.
Amerz Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Thanks everyone. He actually just called and I was rejected, but he wanted to say they liked my app, but there was someone else who was a better fit. Guess it was nice of him to call.
acquablu Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Sorry to hear that Amerz. I agree that it was very thoughtful of him to do a phone call. Good luck deciding among your other offers.
acsmtl Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi all I just got email from POI and he asked me whether I want to attend without assistantship for first or first 2 years. What does it mean to you. Is that mean if I can take care of my expense, he will offer admission? Please let me know your options Thanks
tie Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Sorry Amerz. I am surprised he called with a rejection. I would think it means that they were impressed with your application and interview. It was nice of him to call, though. It seems like it would be much easier to send an email rejection than a phone call. I would hate to call applicants to say you are rejected.
Amerz Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 Thanks guys it's so nice to have this forum, at least others know what you're going through! It was totally weird, and personally I would have preferred an email, because then I can sob in private lol. As it was I was sort of in a hurry to hang up once he said it - not that I was rude or anything, but I didn't have the emotional capacity at the time to try to make him feel better about the fact that he was rejecting me. Anyway, he did sound like he felt bad. I really like the guy, but he was right - it wasn't the right fit for either of us, in terms of research or work habits. But rejection still stings.
