Post: #1Deciding between UMich and CMU Mech eng

Hi,

I have been admitted to master program in mechanical engineering at both CMU and UMich, and currently in the process of making final decision. My specialization is CFD and fluid mechanics, so does anyone has any idea about which U is better in this specialization, I am interesting in doing research with professor Donghyun You group at CMU and with professor Eric Johnsen group at UMich. I also would like to know job placement rate after graduating from both U and their reputation in engineering industry.

Please also advise the living place between both cities, which city is more appealing to live in.

Thank you very much for your advices. I have to make te decision by this Apr 15th.

I would ask the graduate program director at each department what their record of job placement is for Master's students.

I haven't been to either city but I would venture to say that Pittsburg is a much nicer city to live in.

Have you made sure the two professors you mentioned are willing to work with you? Some professors might not have time to work with students at the moment. You have probably already checked with them, but I just want to make sure you have since knowing that one professor already has his hands full may tip the scale heavily in favor of the program with a willing advisor.

I used to work in CFD.  Out of UMiCH, you're going to probably look into working at CD-Adapco which is nearby in Plymouth or direct for one of the Big 3.  I worked at CD for a few years and ultimately left for a higher paying position with Booz Allen as a consultant. Most of the project work there was very heavily driven by the Big 3.  At the time, I only had a BS degree.  Most of my co-workers were non-US natives; there is some money to be made with government contracts due to ITAR restrictions.

Ann Arbor is awesome, Pittsburgh also pretty cool. Name brand recognition from UMiCH in this area is supreme.
