So... I've been struggling with this one for awhile now. Both are for MAs in Media Studies, but the New School gave me financial aid and, at least during my first year at UTexas, I won't have financial aid. Also, I lived in NYC before and know people there. Austin would be a completely new experience.

Anyone know how the programs themselves compare? If there's a big difference between the two?

Any tips are appreciated!

Have you thought about the cost of living difference between Austin and NYC? Also, grad school is busy and you will not see your friends as often as you might think. Plus, having an outside friend network may make it harder for you to make friends and network with people in your graduate program. Just some food for thought.

Yeah, the cost difference is definitely a factor, but in NYC I'd definitely have a roommate and I have financial aid, so that'd help a bit. In Austin, I'd either have to find a roommate or live on my own. And I don't think having friends in a city already would interfere with making other friends. My main question right now mainly involves the overall picture and weighing pros and cons.

One I'm having a hard time deciding on is which programs/school is best. Or if they're pretty much on equal footing.

UT Austin has international name recognition (top 25 in the world according to the Times ranking), The New School not so much. Austin is definitely cheaper than NYC, so you have to add living expenses to your New School scholarship, it might still be more expensive than UT Austin. That being said, The New School has a fame for being very creative and collaborative, so there´s that. Make a real estimate of costs and talk to current students in both programs, you´ll get a clearer picture.

I also got into the New School's Media Studies program, but have taken the offer from GaTech and their Digital Media program instead.

TNS is just too expensive. No assistantships for first years, subpar aid packages, and a meh program.

I hope you decided on Austin! :)

Coming from a person who has never been to the U.S. wouldn't help you much, but personally I would choose UTexas. I also got accepted to The New School with some financial aid, but after asking around, living in NYC will probably cost more than that in Minneapolis.
