nehs Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 (edited) I submitted my master's thesis originally 2 weeks back. I didn't receive great feedback and so had to do major revisions. Finally, did those revisions and submitted today morning. It is 8 hours since I submitted now but that thought of "anticipating feedback again" is making me so anxious, that I'm feeling sick. How do you guys handle this phase of "thesis revisions"? In my Dept. we do a "formal oral" defense only after the thesis has been "officially accepted". I'm so paranoid about hearing feedback again that I'm losing sleep and my peace of mind!!! P.S.: My advisor is pretty much useless in this regard. The feedback that I await is from my committee. One of the committee members happens to be the Department chair as well. Edited May 14, 2013 by nehs
ELM616 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Yeah I'm busting my arse trying to finish my thesis in time to leave for my PhD and in the same boat. I submitted my thesis to my main advisor and he suggested I use a specialized econometric technique. So I spent a few weeks working on this technique called Difference and System GMM. I ran into some difficulties and when I emailed my advisor for some help he replied back saying he'd never actually used the technique but that it is difficult and complex to implement and referred me to a member of my committee. I met with that commitee member only to have them tell me this technique is fairly advanced and not suitable to my data. So I've basically wasted a month. Back to the drawing board and only have two months to have my thesis approved for oral defense. The good news is they've recommended I stick with a fixed effects estimation which is pretty simple. So I'm working out the kinks with a fixed effect estimation under the guidance of the committee member, then I should be ready to resubmit. Luckily the rest of my editing is pretty much done, except for interpreting the results of my econometric estimation which shouldn't take that long. The only way I deal with it is by having faith that it will work out just in time. If for some reason it doesn't I can always leave for my PhD and defend via video teleconference once fully approved. One student from my department had to do this last year so at least there is precedence in my case. Also I cycle 12miles and run 3 miles, three times a week. Lots of exercise is the only thing that keeps my mind relaxed and sharp. (If only my family and friends knew how much is to be sacrificed and how hard it is to be a high performing graduate student they wouldn't ask so many stupid questions or ask me to help them with their lame homework!)
nehs Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 ELM : We seem to be at a similar stage. I resubmitted mine yesterday after my revisions and I've been sick since that time anxiously hoping that all goes well this time (may be minor corrections). Yes -- it is so much work. In my Dept too, they allow us to "defend" from anywhere in the world. The defense in my dept is really short, 5 mins that's it. They usually want to approve the written document before the "defense" and that's what i'm doing now. I should start running again, I've been so busy with this thesis stuff that I stopped running thinking it would waste time.
