liaqat Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 i took my GRE and got 149, 160 and 3 in verbal, quantitive and analytical repectively. I am applying for MS in Environmental and water resource engineering? Is that good enough or I should take the GRE again?
Monochrome Spring Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 You should post percentiles, as those are better indicators of your true score, compared to a raw score.
efh0888 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 It's all around on the low side. You would need to do better if you wanted to get into a top program.
ShortLong Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I would try taking them again. I do not think that your GRE scores factor that highly in the decision, but they are still on the low side. Spend more time studying math, and that will help.
free_radical Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 You should look at the websites of the programs you're interested in, and see what their average scores are. That's the best way to figure out if scores are "good enough."
AllThatJazz Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 From what admission officers have told me, GRE is usually the last factor they look at. Also, it depends on the program you are applying.

jacket24 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I applied last year with 159V, 159Q, and 4.5AW and got into more than half of the MS environmental engineering programs that I applied to. That said, I'm applying for PhD programs next fall and plan to retake it since my scores were lower than I hoped due to minimal studying. I advise you to focus on bringing up the writing score since some professors may view that as indicative of your ability to generate and dissect arguments, an important skill if you plan to pursue research.
Arcanen Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 since some professors may view that as indicative of your ability to generate and dissect arguments Yeah, no. A very low score on the AW is troubling, but not because it says you're unable to generate and dissect arguments (the marking is too subjective to really allow for this distinction); it's because a very low score on the AW indicates your English is poor.

This is not based on my personal opinion, but on those of professors that I have spoken with in my department. I didn't pay much attention to the AW section my first time around but was advised to try to bring it up for PhD applications. That is not to say that there is much merit behind the score, but if some adcoms weigh it more heavily I would rather not leave it to chance.
hvasilev Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 How relevant are V and AW for admission in Engineering ? For example my GRE scores are: 166Q 144V 3.5AW Retake ?
MikKar Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 144 in Verbal is low yeah, be somewhere between 152 and upwards, 4.5 and 5.0 for Analytical Writing should be just about enough as well.
