  1. Rejected from Waterloo for Winte term. Applying for Fall 2014 !
  2. bad. This country has some really significant internal problems with immigration. On top of that the education is really expensive for overseas students. I have no idea why a North American would want to study in Europe. It's on an entirely different level ( and not in the good way ).
  3. The most effective strategies are always very simple. I got 166 only by studying for a week. 1) Turn off all possible devices, communications, entertainment and any other possible distractions in your life. 2) Study between 12 and 16 hours every day. 3) Every time that an interfering thought arises remind yourself that if this continues your hopes and dreams will go and die. 4) Succeed. Big fan of the negative reinforcement
  4. Guys, I really want your predictions. Can you help me with your opinions please, because I'm loosing my mind here. I applied at the MMath Program @ U Waterloo for Winter 2014 ( the program should start in January ) and the Deadline for submitting an application was 1st June this year. This haven't received a decision and they can't provide any more information regarding when the decision might come. When should I start worrying that I'm wait listed / auto-rejected etc. cuz the nightmares are getting stronger and stronger.
  5. God, how I wish i was given a chance for ML research ... now my time is pointlessly spent as a standard enterprise developer.

    GRE score

How relevant are V and AW for admission in Engineering ? For example my GRE scores are: 166Q 144V 3.5AW Retake ?
  7. Thank you all for your time and knowledge.
  8. It's well known that the first derivative of the function which expresses the position of an object with respect to the time is the velocity of that object. However the velocity is a vector and my question is - how can that be ? Is this vector supposed to be constructed by the the absolute value of the derivative and the sign of the derivative ( which gives the direction ) or am i missing something ?
  9. That's probably one of the things which you should have mentiontioned in the OP. If memory serves me right, that's a Spring semester application, in which the spots are REALLY limited ?
  10. The fact that you've been rejected with this application from those universities, pretty much minimizes my chances ( practically your application is better than mine in almost every possible way ) You should definitely try again. At least to me - it looks quite decent. 1) Are you considered to be from a different field if you have a CE background and you apply for a MMath @ CS program ? 2) When did you receive a response from Waterloo ? How long after you submitted your application. Research ... shouldn't matter that much, because it's not an accelerated program ... ( at least that's my logic ). Honestly I have no idea why you were rejected.
  11. I'm currently applying only at Waterloo for the Winter semester. Your background is decent and I believe that you have a relistic chance.
  12. Hello I was wondering if you could recommend any schools which provide accelerated programs ( from BSc, straight into PhD ) in USA for international students. My profile is as follows. Do you believe I have any chance at all at like ... top 20-50 schools ? Sincerely, Vasilev.
  13. Well, in comparison I'm aiming for top30 schools for a Master's Degree and I'm not feeling optimistic at all. But then again ... optimism is just a a lack of information.
  14. I'm curios what your SoP will be looking like with those research interest. Do you intend to state all your research interests in a single SoP or are you going to focus on only one research interest for a specific school ?
  15. I think that you're very optimistic, especially for those "Backups".
  16. Nearly all top Canadian universities offer good funding for international students, provided that you've actually been accepted with a non-thesis option there. Don't target schools which don't require GRE, unless you're from a top university with which the admission committee is familiar. The GRE is used ( to some extend ) to show how relevant your GPA is compared to their standarts. The GRE requirement is working for you, not against you.
  17. Exactly my point. The Verbal reasoning section makes no sense at all, especially for an international student @ CS. 166Q - total of 5 hours preparation ( made 3 practice tests - all 170Q ) 144V - 2 months of preparation. ( Princeton HIT Parade , Anki flash-cards ) As it turns out - my brain is incapable of storing obviously useless information. Am I still worried that i might get rejected for such non-sense like the V or AW ? - Yes .... I most certainly am.
  18. Do you guys believe that the Verbal Reasoning matters at all for CS admissions ? My fears these days are that my application won't actually make some non-sense V cut-off, cuz i have like 144V and 3.5 AW
  19. hi papaul! First of all - cool application ! ( better than mine in every possible way ) Regarding your question - I haven't contacted a professor directly and now when I look back - it might have been a mistake. Only the results from the Winter term admissions will tell for sure. Out of the universities that you've chosen to apply for, do you consider Waterloo to be a safe school ?
  20. I most probably will be applying for the Fall 2014 term too. I'm applying for MMath / MSc CS programs. I've currently applied only at the University of Waterloo for the Winter term 2014 ( some Canadians have Winter terms with deadline June the previous year ). International student GRE: 144 V / 166Q / 3.5 AW TOEFL: 111 GPA: 3.6 GPA Developer exprience: 2-3 years Waterloo, Toronto, McMaster UBC Research Interests: Software Engineering / Machine learning or something in the middle.
  21. The Canadian ones are pretty famous for giving funding to MS students.
  22. Have I been living in a lie this whole time, thinking that I should specify a specific subfield or I have absolutely no chance of admission .... for even a MS degree?
  23. Please provide your source of information that the good MS CS programs require a GRE 150-160V score
