cookies10
I have received financial packages from 2 schools. My top choice is a fellowship that is a full $10K less than the other. I really want to attend my top choice, but this is a big $ difference. I am already covered under my parents' health insurance. The fellowship includes this as well. Is it appropriate/possible to negotiate the $ that would be used for health insurance to be added to my stipend?
jasper.milvain
It can't hurt to ask politely. I would just mention your competing offer and health care situation, and see what the response is. I was deciding between two schools, one with a much lower offer. When I told them what the competition was, they upped their offer by $8 000 per YEAR. Maybe your first choice school won't have the wiggle room, or they won't want to change their offer. But you never know until you ask!
goose2009
I would look into the insurance situation a little bit more. Normally you can't stay on your parents insurance after you complete your undergrad. Normally the insurance company's cut you off after you turn 25 or complete your undergrad. sibil
One school has made me an offer of admission with 50% tuition, which is still too expensive for me to afford. However, I am still waiting to hear back from the other schools I applied to. If I want to negotiate funding with the school that made the offer, is it crucial that I respond right away, or can I wait to see if other schools make better offers so that I can bargain by saying "University of XYZ offered me full tuition," etc. ? TulipOHare
I have nothing to add, except that I'm amused that the two threads currently topping The Bank are "Negotiating Funds" and "Begging for Money."
