  1. On the same note, from how I understand it having publications will also help you get into a top notch post doc. But who knows what will happen once grad school starts, I guess it is just best to see what happens and not worry about it too much now.
  2. Hi, I'm also starting a PhD program in psychology next fall and talked about time lines with a few different schools when I went to interviews. Every one of them recommended that I not try and finish in 4 years, for a few reasons. First, burn out. Trying to finish that quickly will basically require you not to have a life from what I understand. However, the main reason is getting publications out there before you are on the market. Getting publications out takes a long time! First you have to do the research, then you need to write it up, then send it out, and if you don't get rejected outright and have to resubmit other places after revisions, you will likely have to go back and forth with revisions a few times. Anyway, it seems like the number one thing you need to get a TT job right off the bat is a list of publications on your CV, and for that reason the people I talked to said take at least 5 years.
  3. When I was rejected from there I had the same thing happen where my status was changed to "Graduate School Final Review." I think that if you were accepted, especially this late, the department would have contacted you. Then again, I might be wrong.
  4. It is really hard to tell why people tended to get jobs near the school. It could be that they have contacts at the surrounding universities because they were near by, or maybe they just tended to apply to near by universities because while in grad school they started families or decided they liked the area and didn't want to move far away. I would definitely contact the program and see what they say about it.
  5. I'm off to Iowa State for Social Psychology. I'm also really excited about getting a quantitative certificate from them (yay for geeky stats stuff and having more job opportunities when I'm done!).
  6. google "paycheck calculator" and the first hit should be to paycheckcity.com (or something like that). You should be able to figure out what your take home pay would be from that.
  7. Vermont? I would call them, that is how I got my decision.
  8. The way I think of it is how much time am I going to have to be out enjoying the city/weather/whatever while I'm in grad school anyway? Maybe it will motivate you to get work done
  9. I would look into the insurance situation a little bit more. Normally you can't stay on your parents insurance after you complete your undergrad. Normally the insurance company's cut you off after you turn 25 or complete your undergrad.
  10. Oh for crying out loud, will you guys just let it go already? This back and fourth arguing is something that you can take to PM's if you really want to go at it. People reading this forum have already asked you to stop and your persistence is only making you sound childish.
  11. Nope, but I was rejected from there a long time ago, it was one of the first letters I got.
  12. Did anyone here apply to the University of Iowa and hear anything back? I see a few rejections from February on the results, but I haven't heard a peep from them. I'm guessing I'm on a wait list... I just wanna finally hear back from everywhere so I can tell my nagging family where I will be!
  13. I'm moving as soon as I get my darned thesis done!
  14. Hey, I just wanted to thank you for mentioning this. I had no idea that there were options like this. I'm currently working full time (while completing my MA no less) so I have health insurance, but I was planning on quitting at the beginning of May so that I can get my thesis done in the beginning of summer. I was thinking I would have to do COBRA which would be about $250/month, which isn't too bad and because I would work into the first couple days of May I would only need insurance for June and July, but I just got a quote for the temp insurance and that would cost me $185 total for the summer months and is actually better insurance than I have!
  15. The thing I'm wondering is how the OP didn't know that the answer he/she copied down (from what I understand word for word) was for an old version of the book. Was the question completely different? Did you not even read the question before copying down the answer? Based on the original post it sounds like this might be the problem.
  16. You seriously want advice on how to get away with what you did? That seriously left me speechless for some time. It sounds like your professor is going to be pretty hard on you, at least I hope so. I think the previous poster is right that if you were going to be kicked out this would be going higher up, but I wouldn't be surprised if you lost your TA position and whatever other funding you have, at least for a semester or two.
  17. I'm trying to get my thesis done at least by early summer. The school I'm most likely to end up at will still take me if I don't have it quite finished, but that is the last thing I want to worry about while starting at a new place. I have an online study, and had a ton of participants at first, but it has really slowed down. Speaking of which, if any of you would want to participate or would want to tell people you know to participate I would certainly appreciate it (helping out a fellow grad student, yay!). People just have to go to www.murraystudy.com to participate and at the end can enter to win a $50 gift certificate to amazon.com. Good luck with the thesis writing!
  18. I would go to your financial aid office and ask about this semester. I just took some out because I'm going to quit my job so I can finish up my thesis, and it wasn't a struggle at all to get them.
  19. I don't think I'll end up at CGU, but I'm willing to talk with them about possibilities for funding. We will see. I just looked through all of the results posted for U of Chicago and no one from psych has posted so much as an interview. I wonder if they are really just informing people through snail mail... I guess we will know soon enough.
  20. Is it by chance the University of Minnesota? The same thing happend with my application there and then the next day the rejection letter was online. That might not happen for you though, no idea what they do for other departments.
  21. Hi Psychplease, Did you get any funding from Claremont beyond the 25% tuition assistance? I got accepted there too but I'm having a hard time with the idea of going into major debt when I have acceptances from other programs that will give me full funding.
  22. I think your visits will help a lot in answering your concerns about school 2. I definitely think your concerns about the climate at school two are important to consider. I personally wouldn't attend a place that I don't think I would be happy at even if they were offering me more money. If you aren't happy you likely won't be as productive and you won
  23. I think 14k is enough to live on in Minneapolis if you look around for apartments. You don't need to live right by campus, the bus system isn't bad there. I grew up in Minneapolis and I can tell you that the price of apartments really varies depending on where you live. I suggest looking in South Minneapolis. There are plenty of apartments there right on the bus routes. It also depends on how well off you are used to living. I expect to penny pinch while I'm a grad student, but if you are from a well of family this may be a new thing for you. But I certainly wouldn't toss an offer from there based on that money.
  24. I applied to the Social Psych program. I'm sure I didn't get it but it would be nice to know for sure. I have a spot in another lower ranked (although those ranks haven't been updated in 10 years so I don't trust them) research 1 university which I think I will be really happy at, but it would be nice to know for sure where I am going next year.
  25. I'm new to this site, but I was the one with the rejection letter from UMass, it was dated Feb. 27th (not sure what the post mark was because I don't have the envelope anymore). This school was beyond what I was expecting to get into, so no surprise. Has anyone heard from the University of Wisconsin? Someone there just told me they will send out all letters by next Friday. And has anyone heard from the University of Chicago? I know they are sending out their letters this week, but I have no idea if they have been in contact with anyone.
