On the same note, from how I understand it having publications will also help you get into a top notch post doc. But who knows what will happen once grad school starts, I guess it is just best to see what happens and not worry about it too much now.

Hi, I'm also starting a PhD program in psychology next fall and talked about time lines with a few different schools when I went to interviews. Every one of them recommended that I not try and finish in 4 years, for a few reasons. First, burn out. Trying to finish that quickly will basically require you not to have a life from what I understand. However, the main reason is getting publications out there before you are on the market. Getting publications out takes a long time! First you have to do the research, then you need to write it up, then send it out, and if you don't get rejected outright and have to resubmit other places after revisions, you will likely have to go back and forth with revisions a few times. Anyway, it seems like the number one thing you need to get a TT job right off the bat is a list of publications on your CV, and for that reason the people I talked to said take at least 5 years.

When I was rejected from there I had the same thing happen where my status was changed to "Graduate School Final Review." I think that if you were accepted, especially this late, the department would have contacted you. Then again, I might be wrong.

It is really hard to tell why people tended to get jobs near the school. It could be that they have contacts at the surrounding universities because they were near by, or maybe they just tended to apply to near by universities because while in grad school they started families or decided they liked the area and didn't want to move far away. I would definitely contact the program and see what they say about it.

I'm off to Iowa State for Social Psychology. I'm also really excited about getting a quantitative certificate from them (yay for geeky stats stuff and having more job opportunities when I'm done!).

The way I think of it is how much time am I going to have to be out enjoying the city/weather/whatever while I'm in grad school anyway? Maybe it will motivate you to get work done

I would look into the insurance situation a little bit more. Normally you can't stay on your parents insurance after you complete your undergrad. Normally the insurance company's cut you off after you turn 25 or complete your undergrad.

Oh for crying out loud, will you guys just let it go already? This back and fourth arguing is something that you can take to PM's if you really want to go at it. People reading this forum have already asked you to stop and your persistence is only making you sound childish.

Nope, but I was rejected from there a long time ago, it was one of the first letters I got.

Did anyone here apply to the University of Iowa and hear anything back? I see a few rejections from February on the results, but I haven't heard a peep from them. I'm guessing I'm on a wait list... I just wanna finally hear back from everywhere so I can tell my nagging family where I will be! :wink:

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for mentioning this. I had no idea that there were options like this. I'm currently working full time (while completing my MA no less) so I have health insurance, but I was planning on quitting at the beginning of May so that I can get my thesis done in the beginning of summer. I was thinking I would have to do COBRA which would be about $250/month, which isn't too bad and because I would work into the first couple days of May I would only need insurance for June and July, but I just got a quote for the temp insurance and that would cost me $185 total for the summer months and is actually better insurance than I have!

The thing I'm wondering is how the OP didn't know that the answer he/she copied down (from what I understand word for word) was for an old version of the book. Was the question completely different? Did you not even read the question before copying down the answer? Based on the original post it sounds like this might be the problem.
