Yetanotherdegree Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I have a small book allowance I get to use to order whatever I want. I already have my textbooks, and I have to spend it within the next month so I can't just wait and buy future text books. What would you recommend? I have enough for a nice little pile of books and I don't know what to buy
Fnkyfreshman Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 You may need to narrow down your options. Should they coincide with your current courses? What are your research interests?
Yetanotherdegree Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 You may need to narrow down your options. Should they coincide with your current courses? What are your research interests? Ah, but that's the thing...I already have/know most of the really relevant stuff for my (narrow, boring) area of interest. I would love to branch out a bit, or to come up with something a bit new.. Any suggestions welcome!
Fnkyfreshman Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 http://www.christiancentury.org/article/2010-10/essential-theology-books-past-25-years You can start with these.
Lux Lex Pax Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 If you want some medieval legal and political thought, you could go with A History of Medieval Political Theory in the West 6 volumes by R. W. Carlyle and A. J. Carlyle (a classic, out-of-print, and hard to get a hold of but still cited), Medieval Canon Law by James Brundage (expensive and hard-to-find), and The Common Legal Past of Europe by Manlio Bellomo. Those will give you a good start for understanding medieval legal and political thought.
dr. t Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) Or anything by Peter Brown that you don't have already. If you get his bio of Augustine, get the second edition, fyi. Edited August 14, 2013 by telkanuru
MBIGrad Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 As far as newer stuff, Jonathan Armstrong's translation of Eusebius' Isaiah Commentary either just came out or soon will, and it is the first translation of this work. Early Church History is too broad a field, however. Joe Kelly's books are fun to read, and Margaret Mitchell, Elizabeth Clark and Stephen Davis and worth checking out.
Yetanotherdegree Posted August 18, 2013 Author Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks, everyone! There's a new edition of Peter Brown's bio of Augustine being released In November, so I think that's on my list, as well as some stuff by Daniel Boyarin and maybe a few of the more obscure early church writings
