cdunlap Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Hi everyone! This is sort of off topic, but I can't find any information/help anywhere else. I am applying for a Masters in Development for Fall 2014 and am having trouble uploading the required PDFs. When I click continue it says 500 Internal Server Error. I contacted the Institute and they told me to make sure the file names are short and without special character (they are) and the files are under 2MB (which they are). I tried uploading again with those requirements and it still is not working. Did anyone else run into this trouble? Or have any advice on how to fix it? Thank you!
IRToni Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I don't remember having this problem. My tips: Try different times. Look up what time it is in Europe, and try at night, e.g. 3 AM. If it still doesn't work, see if you can upload an empty document, just for trouble-shooting. If you can upload the empty doc, try reducing the size of your documents. If you can't, contact IHEID again, tell them the problem, and ask if you can send them your documents via mail. Does IHEID use their own system, or does it use applyweb or some such? If it uses applyweb or something like this, contact the people there! Be persistent! Hope everything works out, and good luck with your apps.
cdunlap Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 IRToni, Thank you for your help! I was getting very frustrated, but I finally figured it out! All I needed to do was use Chrome instead of Safari. I don't know why I didn't think of that 4 days ago!
morocca Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Just been accepted to MA in IR/PS whooo hooo!!!!
k_angie Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Just been accepted to MA in IR/PS whooo hooo!!!! Oh good at least some one was. Congratulations
IRToni Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Congrats, morocca. If you have questions about the program, don't hesitate to ask!
morocca Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Thanks, IRToni. What program are you enrolled in?
morocca Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Im curious as to the careers IR/PS students go on to. Do they tend to gravitate towards academia or enter the workforce similar to the MIA students? Thanks in advance
IRToni Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 It seems like there's roughly an even split, possibly with more people wishing to work in analyst-type positions than going on to do a PhD directly. In my class of 19, I know of 5 that for sure wanna do a PhD, 4 that know for sure they don't want to do one, and the rest is considering it. In theory, IR/PS is supposed to prepare you for more research-oriented careers than MIA, but of those people not wishing to do a PhD, many are going in the same/similar direction as the MIA people.
morocca Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Do you know where students who have gone on to Phd's have ended up? If I were to go that route, my top choices would be in the U.S, and U.K. Thanks in advance
ulydora Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 (edited) hi everyone, i just found here. and i got admitted to mia for quite long. well.. i was exhausted at that time thus i didn't apply for scholarship. sad story. and i heard Geneva is a veeeeeeeery expensive city?? i only found that there's CHF 2500/semester for grad fee right? curious about the expense there! JSS Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Hello everyone! i notice today that the Institute is asking for official transcripts accompanied by grades scales and their value....but my university transcripts only indicate my grades and the number of ECTS granted, No explanation of the grading system is provided! i am a little bit freaking out... is it the same for some of u? thanks in advance and happy holidays!
gsp Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hello All, I too have the same question that lou38 has - what do they mean by "an explanation of the grading scale" that needs to be provided along with the grade reports? My grade reports are in English and give the max, minimum & obtained marks (no ECTS/GPA) for each subject that year, along with the total marks & Class obtained. Another question - this is specifically for k_angie since you are from India; anyone else who can provide some insight, please do! Regarding the details & documents to be provided to apply for scholarship - 1. If I am not financially dependent on my family, would I still need to give their income details when applying? -- On the application form, under scholarship information, there is a section for details on family wealth; here, we are asked to also provide "Proof of income and savings/wealth of the candidate as well as of his family if they are supporting him financially" 2. Would Income Tax Returns document for the most recent financial year be sufficient or should I provide bank statements & pay slips as well (and what other documents are required)? -- The Scholarship details page says "proof of the student’s and his/her parents’/tutors’ income and savings in local currency (bank statements from the last six months, tax certificates, yearly or monthly salary slips)" Thank you in advance!

So see for this I would suggest that you talk to the institute and email them your problem. I am sure they will get back to you with a better solution than us guys. The transcripts I received from my university did mention the grade scales so I didn't face this problem.

Nope you don't need to submit your parents anything if you are not depended on them for financing. In that case you will supplement your documents as in your income details, financial position and tax returns. 2. As I am financially depended on my family, I sent my dads's bank statement details of 6 months. With that I also sent the income tax returns of one year of my father. Apart from this, they need a letter for scholarship and you are all set Btw which course are you applying for?
gsp Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Thank you for your responses! I am applying for the M.Dev course..
yddd Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Just been accepted to MA in IR/PS whooo hooo!!!! Congrats! I was admitted to the same programme as well, really pleased to have found this forum and someone else being accepted. Did you already give them an answer whether you accept the offer? Best, Yana
k_angie Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Okay so I just attended the IHEID info session. I got to know that these guys received some 400 applications for interdisciplinary programmes. Out of those 60 of them were admitted while 180 deferred and others refused. Only the beyond excellent students made it to the programme in this round. More waiting!
gsp Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 No problem! I applied for the same course. Ok...! and just noticed on the other thread that you got accepted into Sciences Po! Congratulations!! .. But yeah, sad about waiting for IHEID results... Although I am going for the 2nd submission round, its gonna be quite a long wait for me too now..

Hello lou38, I too had the same question and asked them this, during the online session yesterday. The rep said there would be no need to explain the grades, she also said usually the grade reports have an explanation of the grades at the back.. But, they are quite used to the US & UK/European grading, so it should be fine... Hope this helps!

Did you already give them an answer whether you accept the offer? Best, Yana I think that depends on whether I get a scholarship. I'd love to go but I cannot do so without any funding.
yddd Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I think that depends on whether I get a scholarship. I'd love to go but I cannot do so without any funding. I totally understand, it's similar for me. I'm trying to find any other funding options just in case I don't get a scholarship. Good luck!
