Vaibhav Shah Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Hey there! A little about me: I am a second year undergrad in Mechanical Engineering at IIT-Bombay (India). So, I've always been fascinated with languages and especially, the acquisition of a new one! I am a TA for English here at IIT teaching kids from a vernacular background trying to adapt to English in a semester's time. I also know 6 languages:Languages used in India: Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati Others: English, Intermediate French, Elementary Spanish I am also pursuing Computer Science as a Minor. Having said all that, I have no prior experience in the core field of linguistics. But during the Spring of 2014, I'd like to change that. I know it sounds really amateurish but I am curious and I'd really like to know if Linguistics is what I'd like to pursue in the future. For that, I was thinking of applying for an internship opportunity under a professor at some of the elite institutions for linguistics in the world like MIT, Cambridge, UCLA, Berkeley, Harvard among them. It seems too ambitious like many seniors have told me but I am ready to fight for it and learn theories/skills/whatever they'd expect me to know for it! So, here! I've laid it bare and I'd really appreciate it if all of you could guide me regarding this. Any tips about Linguistics, professors and institutes famous for it, famous programmes I could do, how I could tie my engineering skills to linguistics, realistic and genuine advice- anything would be welcome! Also, I'd be really grateful if you could guide me regarding applying for an internship in Linguistics. Thanks and looking forward to some help Preferable Internship Period: May 2014- Mid-July 2014 Regards, Vaibhav Shah,
Arezoo Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Hey, If you're looking for available internships, there is a website for this purpose: http://linguistlist.org/internship/ Hope it helps!
Vaibhav Shah Posted October 11, 2013 Author Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) Hello there! Thank you for the site But the site has internships for people who already are linguists. I would like to work on something in linguistics that would be suitable for someone with my background and skill set. Another thing. Do faculty at the top institutions take overseas students for paid summer research internships? Edited October 11, 2013 by Vaibhav Shah JD - (0) 1
