  1. i advise you to ask those universities whether they will accept late reports or not. Most of them will allow you to complete the application in a week or 2 after the deadline. Good Luck!
  2. The test is section-adaptive not question-adaptive, so the difficulty level of each section will be determined by how well you performed on the previous section.
  3. yes, i heard some ppl talking about this issue. It happened because of what you chose when registering for the GRE
  4. Hey, If you're looking for available internships, there is a website for this purpose: http://linguistlist.org/internship/ Hope it helps!
  5. some of my friends had the same experience, but at the end, their scores weren't competitive, and they didn't get in
  6. There is another thread with the same content here:
  7. In addition, all the word lists you need to know is available via QUIZLET for free. Good Luck!
  8. I had the same experience with a great professor who replied to me immediately, and encouraged me to apply, although she mentioned that it's a competitive school to apply. I've also had no replies from so many schools, and some even emphasized that the committee will decide which student will be accepted. No Canadian professor replied to me till now, even though they are literally persuading the students to find a supervisor before applying. All i can think of is that the process of accepting students in linguistics differ from other majors which fund students through their own projects, and there is no departmental funding available. comments will be appreciated
  9. Hey, There is a great extension for Chrome called pervasive GRE. Whenever you visit a website, clicking on it will highlight all the GRE words (those in Barron's) on that page: "Pervasive GRE searches a webpage, and highlights words in the Barron's GRE 4,579 Word list, adding tool tips contain relevant definitions". Good Luck!
  10. Hey, You can only reschedule to dates available.
  11. I have seen in many different rankings that the quant score is taken into account for ranking different universities against each other, and i doubt it has no effect on adcoms. take a look at this website: http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/linguistics/program/ranking/umass/5586
  12. There are some schools which offer funding from the second semester, or even the second year, and as an international student, i know many people getting into a school without funding, but after showing their potential at the first semester, they were able to get funding for the second semester on.
  13. you cannot choose sections of different tests to report, but there are some universities which take into account only your highest scores in each section if you have taken the test more than once
  14. Some universities specifically mention not to send any GRE score. UCLA linguistics department: Please note that the GRE is NOT required for admission to our program. Please do not submit GRE score reports to us, as they will not be considered.

  16. Of course they do! As a whole, I didn't think there might be a professor at a prestigious university who is interested in late bloomers.
  17. It was really helpful. Thanks a million! I found out i'm not the only person who has some kinda laziness. What also captures my attention was that when admitting a person to grad school, they take into account whether that person has any other job experience that makes him choose being a scientist over being . I myself didn't want to mention having an unrelated job for a few years because i thought i have to just mention those related, but when i go back in time, i understand that those few years made me be sure that i want to teach ( which i have done since then) and do research. Another thing that i wasn't sure of was the age factor which will never be an issue to me. It was really inspiring. Thanks!
  18. Hi, As a person who wanna apply to PHD programs in the US, I decided to start this topic that will help future applicants gain more insight into what they have to bring to the table. There are so many threads in other majors, but none for linguistics. I would really appreciate it if you could participate in this topic and share your experiences. ATTENTION: THERE IS NO NEED TO BE SPECIFIC ABOUT ANY OF THE FOLLOWING. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution (Ivy, state school, etc): Major(s)/Minor(s): Undergrad GPA (rank in class): Type of Grad Institution: Grad GPA (rank in class): Position in class: GRE (Q, V, AWA): Any Special Courses: Letters of Recommendation (from professors of which universities): Research Experience: Publication (whether in a journal, an international conference, etc): Teaching Experience: Subfield/Research Interests: RESULTS: Application Year: Acceptances(w/o funding, not the exact amount): Waitlists: Rejections: Pending: Going to: Sample SOP (You can ignore it): Writing Sample (just the pages and level of content): Advice:
  19. and the acceptance rate is 8% according to the graduate coordinator of the program. I don't know whether the same scenario applies to all the PhD programs in the US.
  20. i use http://www.mnemonicdictionary.com/ for remembering words, and it has helped me a lot till now. Hope it will help

    GPA

I don't know about psychology, but i know that some Canadian programs take into account the GPA of the last 2 years, and you have to check their websites. I have also seen some American universities following this rule, but it is more prevalent in Canada than the US. Good Luck!
  23. I was like this last year applying. I couldn't convince myself to study for it. I ended up not applying anywhere cause i believe i can be at the best university that i can possibly be, so i just tried to change my viewpoint towards the exam and everything changed. I'm really enjoying studying for it now, and i can say that as a non-native speaker of English,I've augmented my repertoire of words and skills which allows me to do better after starting my studies there. This is all i can tell you after delaying the whole application process for a year.
  24. I experienced the same situation when i was an MA student. I chose a topic that was beyond an MA thesis as described by the others, and i finished my studies after 4 years. I completely know how you feel, and this experience made me be stronger than before. I'm now in my 30s, but i decided to apply for PhD programs in the US with a GPA of 3.5. It made me be more ambitious than before. Don't let that experience depress you in any shape or form. Good Luck!
  25. Hi congratulations! As an international student myself, i have seen so many international students being accepted to top universities with the score you've got (AWA 3), so i think it won't affect your application negatively. Good Luck!
