Hertz Foundation Fellowship

Just noticed there isn't a thread for this yet. Anybody else applying?

I count as a non-first-year grad student so I'm frantically trying to figure out how to make my case that "receiving a Fellowship would result in exceptional leverage in the kind and quality of [my] graduate work, including [my] ability to pursue promising new ideas."

Well the Fellowship is only eligible to applied scientists and gives out about 15 a year, so it isn't really surprising that there was no thread this year until now--only a small fraction of the grad cafe user base is even eligible, much less are "the brightest technical people in the Nation." Best of luck!

I didn't even find out about this until yesterday, but I think I'm going to apply.  They have an interesting "moral committment" requirement, where you pledge to use your skills for the good of the nation in times of emergency...

Not just bright, but moral and patriotic too! It figures this started in the 50s.

No, and I'm by no means implying that I certainly will.

I just figure that most things I would do to prepare for an interview would be beneficial regardless of whether or not I receive an interview, and was curious if anyone had suggestions on preparation.

Here's some good advice from one of last years finalists.

I don't know if this thread is still active, but I'm confused about the instructions on the last page of the application. The Additional Information section instructions are:

"This page (Page 12) is to be used for submitting a personal essay or for pasting in an essay that is TEXT only. Include here information about your favored extracurricular and leisure time activities since your graduation from high school."

Does anyone know what people usually put here? What kind of a personal essay are they interested in? Should I just talk about what I learned from taking a leadership role in a club sport in college?

Thanks!
