Nords Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Is anyone here either applying to the doctoral program at UCSB or already a student/faculty member there?

ajaxp91 Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Is anyone here either applying to the doctoral program at UCSB or already a student/faculty member there? I'm applying to the doctoral program at UCSB as well. What research emphasis are you selecting? I chose American Politics and Methods.

Interesting. Mind if I ask who you're hoping to work with? I'm going for IR and am hoping they'll let me pick political economy as my self-defined field. Really hoping to work with Dr. Cohen. Have you already finished your SOP?

I can't see why they wouldn't let you select Political Economy as a sub-field under IR, and Dr. Cohen would be a great choice. Are you specifically interested in fiscal and monetary policy? I'm primarily interested in working with Dr. Bimber, among one or two others. And yes, I've completed my SOP. Have you finished yours?

Hopefully you're right! Yeah, EU monetary politics and financial regulation are my primary areas of interest. I'm 99% done with my SOP. Just putting finishing touches on it. It's a bit different than my other ones, so it's taking a bit longer! Dr. Bimber seems interesting (though I didn't read much about him, since his area of research was clearly very different than mine...)
brittney1 Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I am a student here. Cohen and Bimber are freaking amazing. Just real down to earth amazing people with tons to offer. I don't think that political economy is a possible sub-field, but field papers are really strongly encouraged, so you would probably do that. It should help prepare you for your dissertation. Congrats and feel free to PM me if you want.

Now just waiting to hear about that funding offer!
