One of their application questions is the following: 

 

Please comment below on your previous college grades as an index of your abilities. 

 

Any advice on how I can tackle this?

I am struggling with the same questions. I am not sure if the intent of this question is to give the applicant an opportunity to explain any bad grades. I would be great to get some input from our fellows.

what are they looking for in this question. is it mandatory to answer it? what if i dont have anything relevant to comment on?

This seems pretty straightforward to me.

Positive trend --> comment on your improvement

Negative trend --> explain

Flat --> comment on your consistent hard work

Break down by major or whatever else might be useful.

To add to brown cow: I would also use the prompt as an opportunity to discuss course selection; why I choose the electives I took; rigor of course; and so on.
