ManTastingTea Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Are people here still waiting to hear from UNC-Chapel Hill for biostat? I emailed Stallings with no response--anyone who's in the same boat? Everyone I know who applied has heard already. I will say when I contacted the department a while back it took a long time to hear from them, long enough that I started questioning whether the email addresses listed on the website were even right. I know academically the program is strong, but I feel like that might be a red-flag for how the department is run administratively.
Portmanteaujam Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 (edited) Possibly. You could probably inquire with the vice chair to see if you can find out your relative position on the waitlist, and thus, likelihood of admittance... I recall in another thread you said that you have several LOR writers who are connected to UCLA. Have you been in touch with any of these professors too, so they know you are waitlisted? Sometimes people can move up the waitlist by visiting the campus, getting profs to vouch for them, etc. That's a good point about informing the professors -- I'll get on that. I asked the GVC for some information regarding the waitlist structure and got totally stonewalled, so I am quite confident they aren't going to look at it until April 16. It's a dangerous game they're playing down there. I'll probably ask my current first choice for a short extension. Edited April 2, 2014 by allemanau
gradschoolroulette Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Do any of you know what happens if you accept an offer and then get admitted off of a waitlist? Do you just lose the enrollment deposit or are you totally locked in to your committment?
literaryreference Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I just looked into this. If you accept a funded offer before April 15, you can get out of it before April 15th, but if you hold onto funding after that point, you need a signed note from the dept.
literaryreference Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Here is a link which explains in a bit more depth - http://provost.gmu.edu/council/courses/apr11/CGSResolution.pdf
clurp Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 (edited) Columbia appears to have accepted people a couple months ago almost, told a few people that they were on the wait list, then rejected some people yesterday. Does anyone know about their process? What does it mean to not have heard anything back yet? I suppose I could email ... Edited April 3, 2014 by clurp

echlori Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 FWIW, Pittsburgh stats has made a few offers and told the rest of applicants to wait...
Portmanteaujam Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I've removed myself from their waitlist. Best of luck to you! Thanks for letting me know! And to you too, wherever you land. Is it Florida or Rice at this point?
ashramsoji Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I applied for UMD an GW. Got email from UMD last week but I'm still waiting for GW. Did you get into UMD? If so, congrats!
ellipsoid Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 FWIW, Pittsburgh stats has made a few offers and told the rest of applicants to wait... . its kind of frustrating. I have one other offer already but its almost time to finalize my decisions and I dont know how long Pittsburgh will keep us waiting.
literaryreference Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I turned down my offer so someone should hear from them soon.
Stat Assistant Professor Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Thanks for letting me know! And to you too, wherever you land. Is it Florida or Rice at this point? I am going to accept Florida's offer. I will decline Rice and remove my name from consideration at UNC later today. Hope that helps someone else out!
jewioru o Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Are people here still waiting to hear from UNC-Chapel Hill for biostat? I emailed Stallings with no response--anyone who's in the same boat? Same here. I emailed her this week and got no reply. I also emailed some one else at the end of Feb asking if they were still expecting to send out more acceptances and got no response either. I am so mad at them now. Since I've been emailed them twice with no response, I don't know if it's a good idea for me to call them. Have you heard anything back from them, gradschoolroulette?
Stat Assistant Professor Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) I'm goin to NCSU! This application season has been hell, and I think I'm on the very fortunate end of applicants. I didn't have the best numbers or come from a good school or know anyone noteworthy or connected to other faculty, but I applied to a broad swathe of schools, put some effort into my SOP (I've read the stickied post about SOPs worth, my experience was that they held at least some value in my application based on discussions with faculty). My experience on this board vs meeting with students and faculty in the real world tells me thegradcafe has posters that are skewed towards the much more competitive end of the spectrum, and that a disproportionate number of people here have been the ones with the most extreme results (ie. someone who got into Harvard and CMU and posters with "perfect" profiles who didn't get in to anywhere). My advice to future applicants is to suck up the costs and apply to more schools than you think you need, a marginal $85 bucks net of application fees and sending your gres will be a drop in the bucket over a lifetime, and is well worth improve your odds at getting in to a school that will be right for you. Best of luck to all current and future applicants, and don't get discouraged. Congrats! Agreed with all of this. Edited April 11, 2014 by Applied Math to Stat VJT 1
