Alterman Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Hi, I wanted to recommend opening an Academia.edu page. I opened one a while ago which was largely inactive. But I recently discovered they send you a notice every time someone googles your name and and lands on your Academia page. The last few days I had people from Chicago, New York, and Toronto who googled me. And although it doesn't really make the process any faster, it does make it a bit more exciting when you realize that someone is currently reading your application files. Having seen that people google my name I also added a picture to my account and uploaded my CV and publications. In today's age, I guess it's not surprising that committee people google your name. It's probably also smart to google yourself and see what's the results you get. This is the mail I got from Academia.edu: Hi X, Someone just searched for you on Google and found your page on Academia.edu. To see what country the search came from, follow the link below:
gretagarbo Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 definitely a good website, and a useful one during the waiting process. But I guess it is more revealing for international students who have no or very little relations in the US and applied to grad schools there.
silver_lining Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I had one, but then got rid of it. The lack of privacy controls bothered me and I also just did not want an internet presence for the admissions committe. There is nothing on that website that wasn't on my CV. I got rid of my linkedin too.
eriatarka Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I enjoy Academia.edu. The search notification that you're talking about is intriguing.... I recently had a search from the area of my top choice school, which I got excited about! And sometimes if you follow a professor's work on there they will follow you back. Can't hurt when it comes to name recognition, I figure. I also surfed it quite a bit when I was researching programs. It's convenient having immediate access to a professor's work when you need it.
