I wanted to get some opinions on whether or not it is acceptable to send a thank you email after attending an interview weekend for a program. If so, should the email be short and to the point? Thanks for all the advice.

I got rejected post-interview, so I sent a polite thank you, and asked for advice on how I could achieve some personal growth. I got good feedback, and really admire this POI. Was sad to have not been chosen, but he was real with me and explained the reasoning behind his decision. The reasoning ended up being something out of my immediate control (no masters, while every other candidate).

It never hurts to thank them for their time, but as always, be courteous of their time and keep it short and sweet.

Yes, it makes a positive impression! Also, if you stayed with a grad student, a thank-you e-mail/card to that person is also appropriate.

I think sending a brief thank-you is a common courtesy that is often overlooked. It should simply thank them for their time, maybe a sentence or two about something you discussed, and reaffirm your interest in the program. No more than a paragraph or so.
