Just Jeff Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I'm an NYU Master's student, and I got accepted into Temple University's PhD in English today. Should I even consider taking it, or is it a "downgrade" from NYU?
Just Jeff Posted March 16, 2014 Author Posted March 16, 2014 I'm still waiting to hear back from these schools: - U. Penn - Rutgers - Cornell - CUNY - Oxford - University of Toronto
Lifesaver Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 If you're still waiting to hear back from six other schools, then wait? justinmcummings 1
Just Jeff Posted March 16, 2014 Author Posted March 16, 2014 If you're still waiting to hear back from six other schools, then wait? No, for sure. I guess I just wanted to have a plan for worst-case scenario.
MadtownJacket Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 (edited) This is the second thread you've started where you've questioned whether certain programs would be considered as a "downgrade from NYU". Graduate school rankings are different than undergraduate school rankings. You really should be more concerned about the fit of the program, the available resources you'll have to do your research, and your relationship with your POI and cohorts. If you think you'd enjoy being at Temple for 4-6 years, then why not consider them? After all, you did apply there. Sounds like you're waiting on other programs to respond though, so I would wait on their decisions before accepting/declining offers. Edited March 16, 2014 by MadtownJacket

Guest Gnome Chomsky Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 What are your other options? The pimp game or the crack game.
naomi6 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Temple University is a great school. It is not a downgrade from NYU. Before you decide, as others mentioned, you should wait for the other decisions. You have almost a month to make a decision (no worries). I do recommend attending the Welcome event even if you are not sure you will be attending in order to get acquainted with the atmosphere. Out of curiosity, why did you apply to Temple in the first place if you weren't sure you wanted to go?
ss2player Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) The pimp game or the crack game. I'm from Philly; this is accurate about Temple, more than you know. Edited March 19, 2014 by ss2player PhDerp 1

I do like their English department, but my professors scared me a bit. It was kind of harsh, to be honest. They said, "Going to Temple from NYU is like trading in a Maserati for a bus pass." Isn't that awful?

Just Jeff Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 I think this speaks worse of NYU than it does of Temple. You're totally right. To be honest, many of the professors are like that, but because I was under their study for two years, I just assumed they were right. But you know, Temple has a beautiful department. I'm sure I'll be just fine there. Its department and coursework was what inspired me to study there in the first place!
