Speechstudent Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I am extremely upset that I will not be able to make the Admitted students day next weekend. I still have so many questions about the program that I want to ask current students in order to get candid answers about how manageable the program is, support systems, length of program, how much emphasis is placed on Medical SLP, extra class requirements, and if geology is accepted as a science. Has anyone been able to contact students currently in the program? If so, how were you able to make the connection?
lisa19 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 I would call or email the department and ask if there are any students you can get in contact with. I visited back in July and met a student who gave me her contact information. Here's what I do know about what you posted: - Other people have posted on here that the program is not too challenging as long as you have good time management. - The program will take 6 semesters. - You can get a medical SLP concentration, and there are plenty of medical resources available. But the emphasis is not heavy where someone interested in working in another setting would be at a disadvantage. There's also an emphasis on literacy and other concentrations such as autism. - MGH requires 69 credits, and 72 if you want a concentration, which is more than many other programs. I've done a good amount of research on this. Some of the extra courses are ones I've taken in undergrad (ex: neuroanatomy) and others are courses that may be offered as electives in other programs (ex: AAC). I made a list of every class requirement at NYU and at MGH and compared the lists. I suggest you do the same if MGH's credit requirement is significantly different than any other program you are looking at. - I was told by a faculty member that only physics and chemistry will be accepted as a physical science.
