  1. Do most students who attend MGH come from outside the Boston area? If so, where do you come from?
  2. Thanks for the responses! Still in the process of making my final decision regarding where best to live.
  3. I know that scholarships choose students with exceptional GPA and GRE scores..... I am wondering if there are any scholarships available that reward grad students in Speech-Language Pathology for unique volunteer or community service?
  4. What are your thoughts on Adelphi......and Touro?
  5. What have you all heard about the program at Adelphi Garden City?
  6. Can anyone share what they know about this program?
  7. I am extremely upset that I will not be able to make the Admitted students day next weekend. I still have so many questions about the program that I want to ask current students in order to get candid answers about how manageable the program is, support systems, length of program, how much emphasis is placed on Medical SLP, extra class requirements, and if geology is accepted as a science. Has anyone been able to contact students currently in the program? If so, how were you able to make the connection?
  8. I am somewhat unsure of exactly what Medical SLP entails. I have heard people refer to MGH and NY Medical College as specific to Medical SLP but I am wondering what exactly that means. Are there any courses that are taken in these programs in addition to what other programs offer (more science or anatomy for example) What types of clients and settings does one work in if they are a medical slp? Any clarification is greatly appreciated.
  9. I REALLY do not want to have to take physics or chemistry. Does anyone know if Adelphi accepts geology? Thanks.
  10. I would love to connect with other accepted grad students of Adelphi GC grad program! Is there a facebook accepted student page for fall 2014? I know there is an accepted Adelphi facebook page but this is for ALL grad students in all programs, and I wondered if there is a separate facebook page just for us Speech-Language Pathology grad students to get to know each other.
  11. Adelphi is a great school. i have a family member that attended it- she said the faculty was awesome, students are very helpful and supportive, diverse students (since they only require 6 courses of pre-req's, you end up with career changing students, which adds diversity to the class),you go to schools on sundays (except for clinic work which is in Garden City campus, and also occasionaly for a class or two u need to attend garden city during the week a couple times). Everyone there gets clinic placements, the only downside is, like in every school, if u want to work with adults, it could be a little harder to find a placement as there are fewer of those to go around. Adelphi has a great name in the field, is respected , and u have to consider at the end of the day, that your education has 2 components: what they teach you /show you in the clinic at school, and then how much work u put in.
  12. Wow lisa thanks! I copied and pasted the response so maybe others who are interested could read as well.Definitely not encouraging about Touro. I have a friend who goes there and she would not recommend it. She is having a bad experience in comparison to mine (I'm at a regular state university). One thing about her program that majorly bothered me is that they don't help their students find placements for externships. What? My school assigns us to sites based on our interests, in comparison.
  13. Lisa, thanks for your response! I am also concerned about the reputation that Touro has and what opinion potential employers would have about hiring students who graduated from Touro. I am not happy to hear that students need to find their own clinical placements....Could you share which forum you asked the question about Touro...maybe I can find other information there.
  14. I am wanting to get a real feel for the program. Anything and everything that you can share is much appreciated.Particularly interested in how manageable the program is, the intensity of critical analysis of research (I have heard from students at other schools that some programs are research-focused and require students to read and analyze endless articles, which takes up so much time that they are barely left with any time to study or create therapy plans. How supportive is the faculty and what is the student body like - competitive or supportive. Good luck to my fellow applicants and thank you!
  15. I am wanting to get a feel for the Columbia TC program. 16. I have not heard yet either but am wanting to get feedback about the TC program. Because it is Ivy league school is the program extremely difficult? Is there a focus on reading and analyzing research studies? How manageable is the program overall?
  17. I am also trying to figure out how difficult MGH will be....At this point I am comparing to Adelphi University which everyone seems to LOVE and students all say that it is challenging but doable. Just trying to get a feel for how "doable" the MGH program will be. I like the idea of working in an outpatient clinic affiliated with a hospital but do not see myself working with patients at the bedside (I am not interested in surgical or swallowing disorders) so I am also wondering about how medically oriented MGH program will be. What are your thoughts?
  18. What do you know about this program? Any incite is much appreciated!
  19. Other than hearing that the director is an extremely stern, but knowledgeable woman, I do not know more about St. Johns. I would appreciate any info you have about this program....
  20. I would love to learn everything and anything about MGH......Difficulty of the program, faculty support, and anything else that you can share. Is MGH a program that focuses on critical reading of journal articles? I have heard students in other programs say that journal reading is so overwhelming in terms of time that they do not have any time to write therapy plans and prepare for exams. I have heard that MGH program is longer than others - is this the case? Good luck to everyone!
  21. If I have to take a chemistry or physics class, have any of you found one that is easy? I have so much on my plate this summer that I really can't add a terribly demanding, difficult class. Thanks!
  22. I have heard that some programs require tremendous amounts of reading and critical analysis of journal articles which is particularly time consuming and students feel completely overwhelmed - they literally are analyzing journal articles all the time and do not have enough time to devote to therapy plans and other work. Students cannot keep up with the journal reading because there is not enough hours in a day! Other programs are more hands-on and clinically focused. Does anyone know which is the case for MGH?
  23. My undergrad program told us that geology would fulfill the science requirement for ASHA. I am now hearing that we need to have a physics or chemistry class? is this the case for fall 2014 grad school admissions? If so, what is the least traumatic way to take physics and or chemistry? I dread taking both!
  24. Thanks so much for the response! Is there a way for accepted students to connect in order to find housing together (to share the rent)? I understand that the first year is in the clinic and classrooms on campus, so maybe no need for me to have a car the first year - as long as I can figure out how to get there using public transportation. Sounds as though I should look to see where I can live and use the LIRR which goes directly to Adelphi campus. Any areas where the commute is doable and is a safe ride after dark Not sure if it is better or not to live with another student in the slp grad program....any thoughts?
  25. goingtobeslp13...You mentioned that your friend is a student at Adelphi and I am wondering if you could share some info about the program.......... I have applied to the Garden City campus, but my family does not live in the area so I would need to find housing. Is it realistic to live in NYC? Where do slp grad students live if they are not living with their families? Do groups of students tend to find housing together? Does Adelphi have the feel of a commuter school, or do students work/get meals and study together? Are the students a close group and are they supportive of eachother? How is the faculty? Is the workload doable? I have heard that some programs require intense analytical reading of extensive amounts of journal articles. Is this the case at Adelphi? Anything and everything that you can share about Adelphi is very much appreciated! Thank you and the best of luck to you!!!
