  1. I love Adelphi campus and clinic is outstanding, but I know nothing about where to live. I would love to live in NYC but don't know if the commute is practical. Any suggestions about where to live that is a good fit (fun neighborhood) for a single woman would be appreciated. Would be nice if I could take public transportation.....but not sure if this is possible or if I will absolutely need a car. Thanks so much!
  2. I am looking for any information about Garden City NY. I am interested in the Speech Language Pathology Graduate program at Adelphi....and my family does not live nearby so I have to figure out where to live. I would LOVE to live in Manhattan or Brooklyn but would like to know if I could easily take the train to Garden City. (The train station is 10 minute walk from campus) Any info is much appreciated!
  3. I love Adelphi but live too far to commute from home every day. I am wondering where it makes sense to live. I would LOVE to live in Brooklyn or Manhatten. Are there areas where it would be convenient for me to take the train that goes directly to Adelphi? Also, can I get away with not having a car the first year as it sounds as though all students get clinical the first year at the Adelphi Speech and Hearing clinic in Garden City.
  4. Does NYU have a strong focus on reading and analyzing of journal articles.....I know people in other programs who say that they are required to read hundreds of articles and critically analyze them which is overwhelming and takes away from time put towards hands on clinical therapy plan preparation.
  5. How would I contact first and second year MA SLP students for firsthand information about their programs?
  6. Any feedback about CUNY vs Mercy, Adelphi, and MGH is much appreciated!
  7. The process of slp grad school admission is extremely competitive.....is it true that once you are a grad student, the program you are in will do everything they can to help you get through the program and graduate? I hear very little about slp grad students "failing out" of grad school. Is this accurate?
  8. I am wondering if the CUNY schools offer less faculty support, caring, and guidance as opposed to the more expensive private schools in NY. Are students in CUNY programs left more on their own to "sink or swim" and figure things out.....or do professors want to help their students pass and do well? I haven't heard anything regarding whether or not this is the case and wanted personal feedback regarding this..... I am looking at CUNY Brooklyn, CUNY Hunter, as well as Mercy, Adelphi, and MGH (in Boston).
  9. lisa19, I appreciate your response! I am confused as to what you mean by the "program takes 6 semesters." Is it longer than 2 years with a summer in between? Congrats to all that have been accepted....what is influencing your decision to attend (or not attend)?
  10. I have heard, repeatedly, that undergraduate slp classes are "kindergarten easy" compared to the demands of slp graduate school......and I am wondering how much truth there is to this. (I found my undergrad slp classes to be pretty challenging) Are all the programs pretty much the same regarding difficulty and demands, or are some "easier" to manage? Do some programs require students to "critically read" and analyze, while others are more straightforward? I am looking specifically at Boston MGH, Mercy College, Brooklyn College, and Adelphi Garden City. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!
  11. How long does it take to complete the program?
  12. What do you know about the MGH slp program? Is it a supportive environment, are faculty helpful....is it extremely demanding or manageable? Does MGH focus on the reading of numerous journal articles, or is it more focused on textbook reading and lecture?
  13. Some programs (like Northeastern) come right out and say that GRE scores tell them who will do well in their program. I have done very well in my undergrad slp courses, but I do not do well on GRE. Not terrible, just not great (145, 147, 4.5). So my question is....should I base my final decision on selecting a program where students score similarly to me...or doesn't it matter? What are your thoughts?
  14. What is the average GRE scores that Adelphi grad students have? I cannot find that number anywhere. Goingtobeslp13, would it be possible for me to ask your friend specific questions? I want to learn all I can about Adelphi and it would be great to connect with someone already in the program. Thanks so much!
  15. I appreciate your response! I am wondering if you know if Adelphi is heavy into reading and reviewing journal articles or it is more lecture and book reading? In general, how difficult is the program? Are students competitive or is it a supportive feel.....where do out of town students live? Any specifics your friend has shared with you is much appreciated. Good luck to you as you make your decision!
  16. When you say that faculty treats graduate students like undergraduates what do you mean? They "baby" their students? Does anyone know which programs focus on the tremendous use of journal reading? I have heard that some programs really stress the need to read tons of articles, while others are more focused on book learning. BUT I do not know which ones!
  17. I wonder if TC being part of Columbia University is extremely challenging. And if there are any programs that are considered to be less challenging?
  18. I have also heard that some programs are focused on tremendous amount of journal reading and summarizing, while other programs have more of a lecture and book reading approach. I would love to know which programs utilize each of the 2 approaches.....
  19. I am trying to get feedback about what is good and what is not so good about the following schools. I would love to hear from anyone who has had direct experience or knows someone in the program. Thanks, and good luck to everyone! Mercy College Adelphi CUNY Brooklyn College CUNY Hunter College St. Johns College of St. Rose Touro LIU Brooklyn NYU SUNY New PAltz
  20. I am trying to think ahead and figure out the positive and negatives of schools in New York. If anyone knows, I would greatly appreciate any specific info that you have on the following schools...... Mercy College Adelphi CUNY Brooklyn College CUNY Hunter College St. Johns College of St. Rose Touro LIU Brooklyn NYU SUNY New PAltz
  21. I know that Adelphi is a large program. What have you heard about faculty involvement and atmosphere of program? What is the difficulty level of the program? Is there an abundance of journal articles to read and analyze or is it more traditional book and lecture learning?
  22. I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge or experience of Brooklyn College and College of St. Rose CSD graduate programs. I am interested in knowing how difficult it is to get through the program, how the professors are (approachable/wanting to help students succeed), what the environment is within the schools and the neighborhood......and anything else that you care to share. Just wanting some other opinions and "inside information" from students who may have attended or have friends who did. Thanks so much!
