rockyB Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Hi, I have been admitted to TAMU and UCSD for CS. Planning for non-thesis. I would have taken UCSD(#15) over TAMU(#40) hands down but the problem is the finances. I-20 Amounts: UCSD= 55k [30k Tuition + 25k Living Expenses] TAMU = 33k [15k Tuition + 20k Living Expenses] Problem: 1)I don't have 55k to show in liquid assets. Only possible through a loan + liquid assets. Is that fine? 2)Is the difference in geographical location + tag + job opportunities + education huge so as to overlook the financial aspect? Thanks for all your answers!!
Rantar Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) Either way you end up paying big, I honestly think the jump in name is large enough to justify the cost difference - the job opportunities are in my opinion more than worth the gap in cost. In the near future you will pay it off anyway as a computer science graduate, but you could likely regret not just going with the better school. If it was fully funded vs. not funded, the choice would be obvious, but I think the better name is worth it since you have to pay either way (especially since a non-thesis MS shouldn't take too long). rockyB Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Thanks Rantar and Flandre Scarlet. So UCSD it is!! Just another question. How long will it take to complete Masters (non-thesis) at UCSD? Note: UCSD is a quarter system. I was hoping to do it in 1.5 years (4 quarters).
Rantar Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) I was hoping to do it in 1.5 years (4 quarters). I've heard 4-5 quarters is very realistic. Edited April 1, 2014 by Rantar
starofdawn Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Thanks Rantar and Flandre Scarlet. So UCSD it is!! Just another question. How long will it take to complete Masters (non-thesis) at UCSD? Note: UCSD is a quarter system. I was hoping to do it in 1.5 years (4 quarters). Also going to UCSD for an MS. If you're non-thesis, it only takes a year (talked to a professor on the phone, he told me this). You just take courses, and at the end of 1 year, you take a written comprehensive exam and then - BAM! - you have your Masters title. He said that a very large majority of students pass the written exam.
zaphyr Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Where does your ranking come from? As far as I am concern both are in top 20 for electrical and computer engineering.
rockyB Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Hey zaphyr, I was looking at the computer science rankings. UCSD TAMU Computer Science Ranking (2014) #15 #40 Computer Engineering Ranking (2015) #11 #21 Moreover UCSD ranking is progressive, zaphyr 1

UCSD TAMU Computer Science Ranking (2014) #15 #40 Computer Engineering Ranking (2015) #11 #21 Moreover UCSD ranking is progressive, I totally agree, my major is EE and for us TAMU is #18 that 's why I misunderstood. I am attending TAMU for a PhD in EE. Good Luck
