Imaginary
This might sound kind of crazy, but I am thinking that perhaps after I get a PhD in English I will get a PhD in Education or Higher Education. I have heard it is very rare for someone to be admitted to another PhD program after they have finished one, unless the field is very different. iphi
They are definitely going to question your motives/goals. Why ARE you thinking of doing it?
Imaginary
I am thinking of doing it because at this point in time, an English PhD is what interests me most greatly for my personal and professional goals. However, when I finish I may want to work at a learning center or in administration at some point. English and Education PhDs are very different, both in terms of the classes that are required and in the type of dissertation that is considered applicable. sassywalrus
From my experience as someone who works at a college, a PhD in English would be fine to work in administration. Most of the time when a PhD is required for a job in administration, they seem to mean a PhD in nearly anything. I don't think a PhD in Education would really be beneficial in terms of cost, time, etc. Especially if it's just for something that might not even happen. babycakes
I think for your situation a masters is as far as you should go for your education background. You do not need a PhD in ed to be qualified to teach or lead. It sounds like you only want to get into an education program to be qualified for something, but that's what masters are there for. PhDs are so you can contribute to research in educational theory. Ask around first before investing 50,100k into a masters program.
