Hi guys,

I'm looking for possible suggestions of things to do this summer that would help my application for grad school. I've been volunteering with an SLP last summer and want to do something different this summer.

Any internship ideas? Study for the GRE?

I heard care.com is a good place, try that.

Try volunteer for summer school for k-6, tutoring, etc.

When I was in college, I worked for my local park district as a special needs camp counselor.  We also had college kids that were employed by the park district for inclusion services and they often worked one-on-one with children with disabilities, such as Down's or autism.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish there were more internship opportunities for undergrads in speech. All my friends in other majors have internships for the summer.

Yeah there's not really any internships for us since we can't really do therapy... I'll be volunteering at a pediatric outpatient center though... Try looking into local SLP offices or related centers to see if they could use a volunteer. Or see if you can contact a local hospital's volunteer coordinator about volunteering in the speech therapy department (or even just volunteering in general.. although opportunities directly related to speech are better, doing anything in a related area, like watching kids at the hospital play center or being a conversation partner at a elderly home is still related experience that you can talk about in your application. Everything involves communication after all, and places like these require sensitivity to each person's situation and understanding them... so you can relate it back to your application!)

See if there's a Kumon school in your area - it's a great way to work with children. I worked at Kumon for two summers during undergrad. I spent a good amount of my time helping pre-schoolers with their reading skills - totally related to speech.
