might be a stupid question, but i just never heard anyone say that and after reading i noticed some universities want an answer from you by say april 1 and some universities GIVE an answer by may 1...

so what are the consequences for example of accepting one university.. and then accepting a second and declining the first... would they charge you? or would that be a big problem? or what happens?

If the program with the earlier deadline requires a fee in order to hold your seat then you have to pay the fee and there is usually no refund. If you get into the program with the later deadline, you can just inform the first school that you will no longer be attending. From experience and reading posts on here, it seems that the worst that happens is that you don't get your money back.

As DS05 said, universities KNOW that they will get people who will decline after accepting and so all you would need to do is email/call and let them know you will be declining and accepting another offer.   The only thing you would lose is a deposit as mentioned if the original school required one.

Just make sure that if you do turn down a school after accepting, you do it professionally. Usually a phone call to your primary contact person is very appreciated, and will maintain good relationships for the future.
