Piagetsky Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I'm planning on applying in 2015, and I'm looking for information on the differences between expectations of US programs and Canadian programs. For example, I've seen the honors thesis mentioned much more for Canadian programs than for US programs. Is there anything else aside from the obvious (research experience, GPA, GRE, SOP, LORs) that Canadian programs are looking for? Right now, I have time to make adjustments if I need to, like seeking out clinical experience if it will help. Also, does anyone have any information on the CPA's mentorship program? http://www.cpa.ca/students/facultyrepresentatives
LebaneseKafta Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hello, Canadian programs are heavily focused on research experience. I would focus more on that than anything else. Also, most unis expect you to have at least one pub. in some way and one conference presentation. Only a minority of unis really put an emphasis on clinical experience, so if you have a bit that's good but research experience will overshadow any clinical experience by a lot. Good luck. lewin Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 (edited) I think the top Canadian programs look for the same things as top American programs. As noor said, research is important: Most programs follow the scientist-practitioner model where you're trained as a researcher first (but this is common to good clinical programs everywhere). Honours thesis probably just gets mentioned a lot because some Canadian bachelors programs don't require it (or it's optional) and they want applicants to have an independent research project of some kind. Pro tip: Get used to inserting u's into your words like honour and colour Edited November 29, 2014 by lewin Piagetsky 1
Piagetsky Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 Good tip! I will also need to work on F to C temperature conversion and the (very logical but totally unfamiliar) metric system. I've been to Canada at least four times and still have no idea how much I paid for gas.http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/Assets/Communications+Centre/Helpful+Facts+Sheets/Canadian+vs+American+Spelling.pdf
lewin Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I've been to Canada at least four times and still have no idea how much I paid for gas. ha, multiply the price/litre by 4 to get the approx price/gallon. Of course there's still the exchange rate..... But assume you paid 1.5 to 2x as much. Filling up gas in the U.S. as close as possible to the border before crossing back is a proud Canadian tradition. BTW, I'm mostly joking about the u's. Anything I write for publication is in APA style so we use American spelling.
