omoplata Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Stanford is also apparently done with Neuroscience invites "for the most part," I was told. Edited January 13, 2015 by omoplata
Sarahlheath Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Hey guys, I know many have received Northwestern (NUIN) interview invitations earlier on and there has recently been a wave of rejections. Does anyone know what it means to not have heard from them - and whether it is worth waiting or is it rather unlikely to get off a wait-list? I am really hoping to finalize my travel plans soon! I'm actually flying out tomorrow, so I think at least some of the schedule is set in stone at this point
GABA-daba-doo Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Heads up -- I just called UCSD and they told me that they were done sending out neuroscience invites. Stanford is also apparently done with Neuroscience invites "for the most part," I was told. Damn. Thanks for the update!
<3neuroscience Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Question for the person who posted an interview with University of Southern California, Irvine.... Is the USC or UC Irvine? Anyone applying to USC or heard from/contacted USC yet?
thindust Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I'm actually flying out tomorrow, so I think at least some of the schedule is set in stone at this point All the best and have loads of fun!!
PeterPanComplex Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Out of curiosity, did any international applicants get interview invites from Stanford??
rawry0 Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 No neuroscience invite from stanford, as an international. I saw 3 people were contacted via phone on the results page.
McHouse Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Anyone knows if international students go through different waves of invites ?
thindust Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I think different schools do it differently - Hopkins for one sent the wave for internationals a week or two after. Sometimes they also assume skype interviews for internationals so they do it later (the email sent is usually different).
Yuanyang Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) I dont get why there are so many interview results from Columbia U in NY. From what I understand, interviews are not part of the application process for the neuroscience program. Are they faculty interviews? Edited January 14, 2015 by Yuanyang

Yuangyang I was under the impression that all schools have interview sessions. I am also under the impression that if someone is not invited to interview, then it's extremely unlikely they will get an acceptance from that school... I wish I was wrong though! If anyone thinks/knows differently, please let me know!!

It says so at the very bottom of the Columbia GSAS admissions faq: gsas.columbia.edu/faq Perhaps they were talking about the open-house event but I'm not sure if its part of the admissions process or just something for admitted applicants.

Maybe the invites were for Neurobiology and Behavior: http://neurosciencephd.columbia.edu/prospective-students/application-process "Applicants selected to visit Columbia will be invited to either of two open house events. Open house dates for 2015 are January 22-24 and February 5-7. Prospective students who are invited to attend an open house are encouraged to arrive in time to participate in an evening reception on January 22nd or February 5th. The next day, applicants typically have a full day of meetings with faculty, students, and program representatives, visits to student housing, and an evening event to familiarize students with the some of the many social and cultural offerings of New York City. Open house events are a critical part of the application process. They are designed to provide students with essential information and contacts that will allow successful transitions to graduate school at Columbia University and to life in the vibrant city of New York."

Neurobiology and Behavior is part of the GSAS, I think you're probably correct though. No "interviews" but they do send out invitations to the Open House event. I'm obsessing over details.

thindust Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Not sure if there are any international applicants here who applied for Penn's NGG... I emailed and was told that the committee has yet to decide on the international students to invite but probably will by this week and if so, the interview would be on the 13th of February(:
nienna Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Any internationals got an invite (or an offer for a skype/phone interview) from Stanford or UCSD? They are my top choices so I'd be devastated if they really were done with calling people for interviews.
thindust Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I am an international. I havent heard from Stanford either ): but have from UCSD and they asked to RSVP for the interview by this friday
tetrodotoxin Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I emailed Stanford a few days ago, and they said they were still reviewing applications til the end of January. Quote: "In general, if one has not heard about a possible invitation by the end of January, it is unlikely that you will be invited to Stanford or admitted."

Is this for the biosciences in general or just the neuroscience prog?
tetrodotoxin Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Is this for the biosciences in general or just the neuroscience prog? Unclear, but the email was sent from the Biosciences account, not anything neuro-related.
neumiz Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Yup. Have not heard anything from them yet. I haven't heard anything either.
thindust Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) To those who heard from Columbia: did you guys have a skype pre-interview to determine if you should be invited to visit (particularly for internationals)? I was supposed to have one arranged during the fortnight that had just passed but it has been challenging to schedule. I am just wondering if anyone is facing the same problem of a delayed pre-interview. I am starting to get worried because the first interview weekend is approaching and the second is in 2 weeks - without a pre-interview soon I am concerned about not being able to visit. tohellwithall Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Is anybody here applied for a PhD in Neuroscience in Germany, by any chance? I'm curious have you heard something from them?
askmehowmuchilovebrains Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone heard from Boston U GPN program yet? I saw couple of people have already asked the same question, did you hear from Boston U meanwhile? I am kind of thinking they probably rejected me since I didn't get anything from them, and deadline was 15th Dec. Thanks for your help folks, good luck!
