StatsG0d Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I sent an email to Iowa State and Texas A&M, they both rejected me. I am fine, since those two were the only PhD's I applied to, and mostly because I wanted to secure funding. I also wrote to U Minnesota and Purdue University. Purdue just replied to me today, they sent two emails: the first one was generic and said something like we will contact by March/April and we cannot expedite the process, and the second one was personalized and told me that legally no one can force to decide before April Xth (I told them I received some offers and wanted to make the decision) and that I should be patient and do what is best for my education. I will wait a couple more hours to receive the email from Minnesota and then finish with this admission process. I contacted Purdue the other day--same story. They said I should know by "mid-April," which is VERY late in the process. I will give them until March before I decide to make a final decision. I don't want to keep the programs that consider me to be a top applicant waiting for some (lower ranked) school that considers me for the second round (yeah, I guess I'm a little bitter haha).
Ergodic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Will UCLA ever make a decision on my application? This is the only school I am waiting for that could potentially change my decision. I have called them multiple times and they just say "we are still reviewing". Frustrating!

My guess is that you're on an unofficial waitlist and that they're waiting for decisions to come back before putting out other offers. If true, that means it could be a while.
Karoku_valentine Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 All the best Karoku_valentine!! Thank you. I mean, I had already decided I was going to Ohio, I just wanted some answers from the others to get some closure.

You are right. It is important to treat well the schools that consider you a top applicant!!

I have called them multiple times and they just say "we are still reviewing". Frustrating! I applied last year and was in the same position -- waitlisted and eventually rejected on April 16th. I would bet you (and I, since I also haven't heard anything yet this cycle) are on their waitlist this year. I wouldn't hold your breath, but there's always hope!
Ergodic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Thanks ar_rf and Portmanteaujam. Yes, it certainly looks like I am on some sort of a wait list. But I saw just 4-5 acceptances on results search for UCLA. Even accounting for under reporting, isnt that a small number for UCLA? Oh well, we can only wait.
StatsG0d Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 For UCLA, do your guys' ApplyYourself still only say submitted? I'm also waiting on UCLA haha.
ar_rf Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 For UCLA, do your guys' ApplyYourself still only say submitted? I'm also waiting on UCLA haha. I just checked and my ApplyYourself status still just says submitted, even though I got an offer letter several weeks ago.
Portmanteaujam Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Same for me -- application submitted.
engenmt Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 When did you hear back from Michigan State? February 4th. Their visiting day is March 21st.
musicalmathematician Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I have noticed that A&M has sent out both acceptances and rejections. I have received neither.. So, am I more or less waitlisted? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I applied there with the mindset that it was my "reach" school.
StatsG0d Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 February 4th. Their visiting day is March 21st. Oh it's for math and not stats? Sorry, I didn't notice that before. I just checked and my ApplyYourself status still just says submitted, even though I got an offer letter several weeks ago. Thanks a lot. Kind of annoying.
Ergodic Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I was just wondering for any particular program - is it alright to send an email to the Vice Chair for graduate affairs asking about my application status ( and explaining him my position) or is it advisable to always reach out to the staff responsible for Student Affairs first?

Not sure what proper etiquette is but I reached out to the office assistant first. Dissatisfied, I then emailed the chair of the grad program directly. She emailed back promptly with more detailed info. I would say email the assistant first. Ergodic 1

Ellies Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Ugh... I am a nervous wreck. This is taking so long! I am tied to New Jersey so I only applied to two programs, both at Rutgers. Statistics (my preferred) in New Brunswick, and math in Newark. I only decided to try and get into the PhD programs in December, and took the GRE a week later. I couldn't take the math subject since it was not offered until April, and thus could not apply to the New Brunswick math program (or any other math programs in New Jersey). I never realized how much anxiety this would cause me; it's driving me crazy! I noticed that last year the stats department did their acceptances/rejections at the end of February. The year before that at the start of February. So I kind of expected a response sometime in February, and have been checking several times a day. It is getting close to the end of February now, and I feel it's got to be any day now...
Ellies Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I have been checking this board for a month now, in the hope that someone will post some information about Rutgers. But nobody ever mentions them.
StatsG0d Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I applied there as well. I have not heard anything. But it was brought to my attention that the school has basically zero funding, and they have not taken on a statistics graduate student since 2012 or something. I wish you the best.
musicalmathematician Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I asked them yesterday and they told me I was not in the shortlist for admissions. I asked this as well. I was just told that they will notify me between February and May.
Ellies Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Footballman, that is not true. They took at least one last year, possibly more (check the grad students on their site; most of them have starting dates). And the year before they accepted three according to the results on this site. Since this site does not represent everyone, there were likely more.

Also, does being tied to New Jersey preclude you from applying to schools in New York? It's not that far of a commute, depending on where in New Jersey you live.

Dissatisfied, I then emailed the chair of the grad program directly. She emailed back promptly with more detailed info. I would say email the assistant first. Thanks footballman2399! I will probably write to the chair this time because it doesn't seem to go anywhere when I write to the office assistant.
Ellies Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Voronoi, I did check out NJIT, but I had already missed their deadline (I think it was December 1). And New York is too far; I'm about 1/2 hour from PA. But I do appreciate the thought! I might try NJIT next year, if I can't get into Rutgers. And some others since by that time I will be able to do the subject test. I would rather not waste a year, though... I did my (math) undergraduate in England (U of London) and was number 1 in my class. Unfortunately, that was 20 years ago; I'm not sure if they will hold that against me! I do have some relevant work experience, but only part-time since I had small children. Two of which have now grown; one is in college, the other going in the fall. I have one more left at home (and a husband), which is why I can't go too far.

A lot of things can change in 20 years, and with no recent evidence to the contrary adcoms are likely to assume that you skills and knowledge have declined at least a little in that timespan. Remember that most adcoms are very risk-adverse, which is understandable since a funded offer is often a ~$500k commitment on their part. If you do end up taking another year and can afford the cost, I would suggest looking into 1-year stats/math masters programs nearby, or at least try to take some classes as a non-degree student. Good grades in a couple difficult and/or graduate classes would probably help a lot. Excelling on the math GRE could also help assuage these concerns, as you already know.
