FaultyPowers Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Hello gradcafe! You guys were so helpful on my previous question (how to explain a bad situation with my MA supervisor without sounding like a jerk) that I figured I'd open this one up to you as well. There is a particular POI who has been adamant about wanting to make sure I had a viable collection ready to go if I'm admitted. I have access to a specific collection in a specific country (I don't know why I'm being so vague but it seems appropriate somehow) BUT, I've just gotten permission to access another HUGE collection housed in an anthropological institute in the capital city as well/instead. Should I email this POI and let them know about this, since it shows that I'm good at finding opportunities, forging collaborations, etc. or should I not, because it would be too much information and may come off as being pushy?
grad_wannabe Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I tend to lean towards the communicative side, so I would email your POI. Something like, "I just wanted to let you know of an exciting material development in my research..." I think it can read as happy and enthusiastic, not pushy!

I'm leaning that way too but I also tend to lean towards the communicative!
museum_geek Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I think it's better to be communicative about this sort of thing, especially since this POI is adamant about the matter. Showing that you're good at finding opportunities and forging collaborations trumps the possibility of coming off as pushy. I don't think this really comes off as pushy anyway.
FaultyPowers Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Ok, confirmation from two distinct people = email sent I figured I would, but I had also figured I would do what I originally intended to do about the MA supervisor, and the second I proposed it on gradcafe I had every single user telling me "for the love of god don't do that!". Measure twice, email once.
FaultyPowers Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 "That sounds like a wonderful opportunity for you and I'm very pleased that you told me." Best. Advice. Ever. museum_geek, Secret_Ninja, grad_wannabe and 1 other 4
Daisy123 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 very cool! lets consider you IN the program already did you apply to the same school last year?
FaultyPowers Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 No, I didn't! I've changed up my entire strategy this year. Christ I hope I'm in but since this is my third time I've long since stopped jumping to that conclusion!
