Ani92 Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 I couldn't find anything about comp and mathbio on grad cafe so I'm starting this. I'm CRAZY worried about fall 2015. I'm applying for PhD. in mathbio in the very few universities its offered in. This is kind of my shout out for all my fellow mathematical biologists, which schools ahve you applied to? Heard anything back yet? Are ya'll as scared and panicky as I am?
wizzyfizzy Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Did you apply to mathematical biology departments, or math or bio departments that do that research?
bsharpe269 Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 My interests are a bit different than math bio but I think I fit this close enough to comment. I am applying to mostly biophysics programs, a couple computational bio, and one Applied Math and Stat program. My interests are in biophysical modeling and computational protein folding and dynamics which doesn't neatly fit into any specific field. All of the programs I am applying to have strong research in this area, regardless of the name of the degree. I have an undergrad degree in math and MS in bioinformatics. My undergrad research was in biomath so I am familiar with the area. What are you research interests?
ghostoverground Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Not sure if I can help or if this counts, but I applied to mostly computational biology/bioinformatics programs, plus one biomath.
thorerges Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I applied to two systems/computational program. Will most likely get rejected by all but who knows
Ani92 Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 My research interests are virology and mathematical modeling. I've applied to mathematical biology/ math and comp bio/ virology/ math departments. Mostly departments with profs whose research is in mathematical virology. Its for a PhD of course. I haven't gotten a single email from the schools yet so not sure when I'll hear back :/
ballwera Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I haven't really heard much at all. I know a few of my adcoms are still meeting some haven't met at all (Case).
bsharpe269 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 I got two rejections :( . I'm scared. Im sorry! What was your undergrad major? Do you have a strong math background?
Ani92 Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 I majored in Bio and minored in math. I'm only one thesis short of a math major. I thought had a strong application. But the two rejections kinda sting. I'm sure I'll get in somewhere, hopefully, maybe. Congrats to you on getting interviews though!!
Mrs. C Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I'm applying for Molecular Biology/Genetics but my undergraduate is in Bioinformatics. poweredbycoldfusion 1
tanaxurato Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I applied to computational / systems biology programs or umbrella biology programs with intent to study the former. I am finishing up my BA in biology with specialization in bioinformatics, along with a computer science minor. I go to a large state school and have done bioinformatics research there and at a summer fellowship program. I applied to seven programs, was rejected from my super-reach school ( I thought I had a good chance because I worked there for a summer, but oh well! ), and accepted to my safety school, and I'm waiting to interview with or hear back on a final decision from the other five. Good luck everyone! I wonder if I've met some of you already at interviews!
expandyourmind Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 i applied to several different programs, mainly in developmental biology. i've applied to Cornell Weill PBSB and UChicago for computational modeling in developmental biology. I'm not an expert in programming but I've dabbled in a lot of software for 3D visualizations of embryos, etc. definitely something i want to get into more. At UChicago they'll let me tailor my coursework so that its a mesh of developmental and systems/genetics/computational biology.
Wishful Thinker Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 (edited) Hi all, I have applied to 5 programs, all MS Bioinformatics. Have been accepted in 3 of those but no decision made from 2 (top in my list). Hoping that they make a decision soon since these 3 have a deadline of 15th April & I too need time to ponder over the options. My undergrad major was bioinformatics too. Ani92 Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 Congrats on getting into 3!! 15th April is right around the corner. You're probably on the waitlist. I'm sure it'll all work out (or thats what I tell myself coz even thinking about grad school makes me wanna crawl in a hole and never come out)

Also, how are the prospects if I wanna start working straight after masters? I'm not really planning on doing PhD soon....maybe after few years of work experience..

I have a similar background, bio major, applied math minor. currently working in a virology/immunology research lab as a tech. I'm thinking about mathematical virology, but wanted to do more wet lab than dry lab.. thanks
