I bought my own modem/router combo from Amazon when they were having one of those ridiculous 24 hr sales (was $80, but got it for $25). I got no complaints at all. Just check the modem you are trying to get is compatible with your cable provider.

I bought my own. My old cable company charged $8/month to lease one and the same one was available on Amazon for like $70 at the time so I just ordered one online. It made sense since I paid less to buy it than I would've paid the cable company in a year. I then used that same modem after moving to a new area. I was prepared to use it again this year after my most recent move but, my current cable company provides them as part of the service (no leasing fee, no reduction for providing your own).

Make sure you price compare before buying. Newegg.com often has coupons for their e-mail subscribers that drop the price of a cable modem below $50. And don't forget to get a good, capable wireless router too.

I decided to buy the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XC6GJ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1yesterday, it's compatible with Time Warner (it was on their approved modem list).

Also, Amazon is selling their Fire Phone for $199 (unlocked) and I am thinking about switch to prepaid phone instead of paying 70/month on phone bill...
