Charlotte C Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Just got my acceptance via email, who else is in Cohort 16? I'm so excited!! twinguy7 1
laurengreen1 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) Me too!! Yaaaaaaay! And congratulations!! Is Northridge your top choice or are you going to wait it out for the other schools you applied to? Edited January 27, 2015 by laurengreen1 twinguy7 1
Charlotte C Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) Congratulations!!! It is my top choice but I also really love a couple of other schools that I applied to. But for now I am pretty sure I will stick with CSUN, what about you? Edited January 27, 2015 by Charlotte C
laurengreen1 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 CSUN was also my top choice, but I also like ECU a lot. I'm leaning towards CSUN, but if I get into ECU, we'll see what happens...a lot depends on where my husband's next duty station is.
Charlotte C Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Out of curiosity, what makes the two programs different? Does ECU help you find clinical placement?
laurengreen1 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) They are similar in a lot of ways. Neither one helps with clinical placements. They're both three years --about 1 yr with just classes followed by two years clinicals + classes. However, ECU has much smaller cohorts and I feel like the program is more organized. What I like better about CSUN is that it's more flexible in that it's more of an anytime, anywhere sort of program (probably more similar to what we experienced at USU). ECU probably provides more interaction with professors, but it also requires you to be available at certain times. Also, CSUN's online program is available in all states and ECU's isn't. The biggest benefit of ECU for me would be in-state tuition rates if my husband gets stationed in NC. However, we're Californians and eventually want to come back here...so it would be nice to have a degree from a CA school. Edited January 27, 2015 by laurengreen1
Shayy_Dee Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 CSUN is my first choice but I applied for the residential program. Now I'm so nervous because you guys have heard already!! What made you choose the distance ed option?
Shayy_Dee Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 And congratulations to u guys who have been accepted! Why are you considered part of the '16 cohort? Do u start in Sept?
Charlotte C Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 And congratulations to u guys who have been accepted! Why are you considered part of the '16 cohort? Do u start in Sept? Hi! Cohort 16 is just the number of the cohort I believe, fall should be Cohort 17. It starts in May. Personally, I chose the online option because I am currently getting my SLPA license and plan to work thorughout grad school. I also loved USU's online post-bach and did really well with an online format. Good luck getting in to CSUN!

What made you choose the distance ed option? We heard already because the distance program at CSUN is on a different application/enrollment cycle than the residential program. (Apply between July 1-Sep 1, find out end of Jan, start in May). Cohorts for the distance option only start in May, unless that's changed. I chose distance ed because my husband is in the army and we'll be moving this fall, but we have no idea where we're going. Like Charlotte, I also really liked USU's distance ed program and found that it worked really well for my learning style and lifestyle. I also like the idea of continuing to work (at least part-time) throughout the program, since it's 3 years instead of two. I also have a friend who graduated from the distance program and was very happy with it. Good luck with your applications! Edited January 30, 2015 by laurengreen1

I ask as our school year here at CSUN (undergrad) doesn't end until May so I wonder if this poses any problems for those who don't want to delay starting for a whole year. Also do any of you know what the difference in cost is? (Between online vs regular CSUN classes). Edited January 30, 2015 by Jolie717
laurengreen1 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) This year orientation starts 5/11, regular classes start 5/26. However, I think it varies from year to year. If you're interested in applying for the distance program starting in May 2016, I'd talk to admissions now. I would think the scheduling wouldn't be a problem, but again, I'd ask admissions. It's hard to reach them sometimes, but they usually get back to you in a day or two if you leave a message. I don't know what the cost of the residential program is, but distance is $43,500 ($750/unit) for the whole three years. It doesn't matter if you're a CA resident or not since there is no state funding for the program--don't know if that applies to the residential program as well. Charlotte C Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 For anyone in Cohort 16, we made a facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/928036703881874/
sarah28 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Hi! Congrats on your acceptances! I have a few questions, any replies very welcomed. Firstly. I graduated from SF state's CD program with my B.A. I don't have a perfect GPA but am well above their minimum 2.5 requirement. Is it very competitive? I am about to turn in my app for the fall '15 cohort. Any ideas on a professional statement? I'm so lost on how to write one! And lastly, I hate to put all my eggs in one basket. Are there any other online programs in CA for SLPA specifically for those already holding their undergrad degree in communicative disorders? It would be hard for me to be flexible or relocate as my husband's job is here and I have a 3 year old who is in preschool. Thank you!!

It would be hard for me to be flexible or relocate as my husband's job is here and I have a 3 year old who is in preschool. Thank you!! Hi! From what I have seen, CSUN is pretty competitive. Most people seem to have had around a 3.9 but I am not sure what the exact stats were. As for a personal statement, our application had some pretty specific questions (about experience in the field, and how you have applied your coursework to actual therapy work) so I just made sure to really thoroughly answer their questions and I had a good example of how I used something I used in my coursework to change part of my therapy plan in my current ABA therapy position. I had 1 letter of recommendation from my job that was strong and 2 from Utah State that I actually never even read and I did not know the professors well (but did well in their classes) so I doubt those were extremely strong. I'm not sure about the other online programs but I think there is a topic about online schools somewhere on the forum if you search Also, is the fall cohort online? I had thought that the fall was residential and spring was the only online option. Hope that was helpful and good luck!
mo~ Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Congratulations on your acceptances! I just have a question, does Northridge look at cumulative undergrad or the CSD GPA? Does anyone know? TIA!
Jolie717 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Congratulations on your acceptances! I just have a question, does Northridge look at cumulative undergrad or the CSD GPA? Does anyone know? TIA! An SLP that I work with went to CSUN for undergrad and grad (not online). She said that from comparing notes with classmates it seemed that they first looked at the GPA for the CD classes, then overall GPA, then lastly GREs and the rest (experience etc). I'm sure it could vary from one year to the next. For one thing, I've heard that our Dept Head might be retiring this year or next, so that may change things up. mo~ and Shayy_Dee 2
